Yikes. This website essentially allows you to snap a photo of someone in public and find out who they are with ease. "PimEyes is an online face search engine that goes through the Internet to find pictures containing given faces. PimEyes uses face recognition search technologies to perform a reverse image search." https://pimeyes.com nostr.build images show up on this tool as well.
😅
But you can pay to remove images from their database! But don't worry dozens of others will pop up.
this is why you scrub yourself on all socials and go full nym
Maybe the people I came across in the jungles of Indonesia who told me they didn’t want their photos taken because it steals their soul had a point!
Fair point.
a good society would deem it to be a crime to capture images without explicit permission, not just "you are on camera" signs it would not be a crime in such a society to burn out the CCD sensors of every single camera that is sited in a public place i think it's pretty hard for them to stop anyone from doing this either, just building the green light laser and infrared aiming system that makes it easy and fast
How can you say it would not be a crime to burn out the CCD sensors of these cameras? They define what is a crime; you would be destroying "public property". Or do you just mean that it wouldn't be immoral?
The optimist and pragmatist in me: this could be huge for locating missing and kidnapped people. The realist and doomer in me: this will 100% be manipulated to further cow and shackle people under the guise of “security.” I hope for the former, but know the likely outcome will be the latter.
It will be used for bad things because some humans are assholes.
But they will never find out who I am on Nostr ahahaha. Your anon online profile is worth more than your real profile. If they click a picture of Satoshi and use that app to find out who he is, they will get a name of a person. But Satoshi lives on the internet. Everyone is taking your picture, Derek. Airports, traffic lights, gas stations, Costco, everyone.
Right. This was my argument for Google Glass. It's that we're on camera everywhere in public.
it's why it's a terrible place to live now... out here in the country there is very few cameras in comparison to in built up urban areas, still too many for my taste, and they are sold to people as security with the feeds going to some security company but i'm sure they get some extra pocket money selling off as many time-and-image-and-location stuff to companies building up these dossiers
I can see the good in this as well as the misuse.
HQ in Belize. Any links to other companies known?
Giorgi Gobronidze, the owner and CEO of EMEARobotics, owns PimEyes. EMEARobotics is a Dubai-based corporation. Gobronidze is based in Tbilisi, Georgia.
Can we sue them?
It looks like they already have several pending from the USA and the EU.
Possibly, but do you expect anything to come out of the suit?
wow thats fucked. what a classically american way to adopt mass surveillance. just make a 'fun' app, sell gathered data in secondary market ( buyers all 3 letter agencies ) and have us do it ourselves 😅😭
It works.
unfortunately the cat is way out of the bag at this point, you can imagine that this system only has a fraction of what government, military and intelligence databases have as well, since they include all kinds of data from the millions of CCTVs they have everywhere i think there is a good justification for building a device that lets you nuke every CCD around you, with a sensor that alerts you that one is looking at you so you can nuke them this is a very hostile environment, having spies everywhere like this, it's like fantasy novels bad guys crows and flies and stuff - and you probably have heard the "birds are not real" stories, well of course most of them are but i totally can believe that they have got spies in forms that appear to be animals and insects by now
Right. The government agencies already have similar tools. What makes this different and worse is that it's normalizing it in a fun and frictionless way via an app.
in other words, this company is almost certainly bankrolled by intelligence agencies as propaganda agents
Anything is possible.
Even if it isn't it may have employees with "special interests".
The gov't just buys, requisitions or scrapes everything they can from private providers, since the standard today is that anything is available for a buck. And once it's stored on a RAID in a bureau office or datacenter somewhere, it's never ever going away. #data #privacy
Bloody Hell, genuinely shocked by this
That’s creepy as heck.
Yup, friend had it paid and checked us all out if we asked. It's useful to trace your own footprints.
Only if you're stupid enough to plaster your face all over legacy social media!
Tagging @nostr.build. Block access?
@Derek Ross , how do you mean nostr.build images show up in this tool? Is there some specific relationship you’ve found with PimEyes and nostr.build, if so please let us know what that is and we’ll block. @The Fishcake🐶🐾 Or do you mean to say ALL images and image uploaders on nostr and all social media are susceptible to this tool?
I see what you mean @Derek Ross , when I searched your image, there were many nostr.build linked results. Although I did see results for primal and nostrcheck.me also. I am thinking they search all links on the public internet, curious if @The Fishcake🐶🐾 knows if we can specifically block them..
Yes, I assume they crawl or have crawled the publicly accessible internet. Who knows if they honor robots.txt or not. And who knows what IPs their crawlers use. The cat's out of the bag. I didn't mean to single you guys out. I just noticed a few from your site and mentioned it. I'm sure if I would have scrolled more, I would have found more Nostr image hosts.
Good observation, I didn’t know what you were talking about until I searched your image. There are a LOT of links from nostr.build.. I also think there is not much anyone can do about it overall, but we’ll block what we can..
😬
It didn't recognize a photo of me with a mask on…
Looook at this @island
There’s also this site that lets you do reverse image search https://tineye.com
I've been prone to pity and mock those who are still wearing face masks, but perhaps they're onto something.. nostr:nevent1qqsgdzajy45n5u20w6ftgyqr6nkjfrsgyej3jd6e43ktj8r7p8mmjcqprpmhxue69uhhyetvv9ujuumwdae8gtnnda3kjctvqgsr7acdvhf6we9fch94qwhpy0nza36e3tgrtkpku25ppuu80f69kfqrqsqqqqqpnr9s2m
you have to cover your eyes with IR reflective material to evade the recognisers, in fact the rest of your face doesn't matter, someone posted about glasses you can get that have these IR filters... it's the same red or green looking stuff you see on mobile phone cameras, those filter out IR because the CCDs are very sensitive to it, and they can see straight through most kinds of sunglasses
We’re only a decade away of the least coolest people (with no funky pictures) running governments and corporations and everyone else being disqualified for being normal humans … or the more optimistic alternative of us all just realizing CEOs/Presidents/Prime Ministers are just normal people and we shouldn’t give the roles so much power
There are apparently no pictures left of me online 😂
What if we start poisoning the well by generating millions of fake faces and profiles? 👀
Friends and family are posting pictures of you? Better stop them. I uploaded 4 low-quality pics I took of this nice old man and got tons of results. https://pimeyes.com/en/results/dzn_240310vQvaG2TfRkX6rkx3721214e?
MY god its get scary how easy it is to find you info is out there
this will leads to the need to flood the internet with misnamed images of yourself
I'm always wear mask on public not because of covid but this nostr:note1s69myftf8fc57a5jksgq848dyj8qsfn9rym4ntrvhyw8uz0hh9sq8fxxee
Wow, this is nuts. I just tested it and it works way better than I had thought it would 🫥
Right? It's pretty good and because of this, I know it will be abused.
