Clients that recommend following certain accounts are defacto "king making" right now, and often recommending inactive but "famous" bitcoiners.

Would be cool to see new users get featured on here, maybe pulling from introductions and randomizing or something? 🤔
for them don't make sense could be easy only add one more contact to follow
 💯 THIS.
 Good call
I definitely want to fix this in damus, but not sure how. I suggested opening the suggestions to the community and have it updated every couple weeks or so.
definitely a combination of creators with: most likes, most zapped, notes/replies activity, tag/mentions -- all of this within a reasonable timeframe.

it's a matter of finding the sweet spot before you can just zap your way in, so a mix of all factors would favor a legit creator.
Problem is most zapped/likes/activity only works with an existing web of trust or else it can be gamed
wash zapping renders it a useless metric
I remember @Mazin built something that associated topics with accounts (I was labeled conspiracy theorist lmfao true) maybe some kind of dvm or special where you pick topics first then it lists users? 🤔

Mazin do you still have this project going?
I’m still playing around with topic classification but it’s on a per note basis and only running on notes sent to nostr.wine atm.

It will mature to something more complete eventually…

A market of algorithms to choose from, with new users able to select randomly 'click in this square, whichever pixel you hit is a discovery algorithm created by someone on nostr.' 'or click in this box for algorithms from your friends and friends of friends' One algorithm could be 'pull all of the last 100 npubs to post in global more than 50 words and less than 250 with no grammatical errors and grab 3 of their friends added long ago. remove anyone that used a cuss word.' list them in order received, then rearrange based on assigning them each a single digit from the latest blockhash. then put them in alphanumeric order based on that assignment. then show all posts by them that have been zapped.' or the proletariat version 'show 100 posts by people who have never been zapped even though they have an attached wallet and don't appear to be often muted' or compare word usage to show similar people or..
or play this game of tetris to generate a seed from which to select a random discovery engine
 Makes 100 sense
they shall think when they tell people to follow us we shall get the zaps and get rich .
It's called an algo. That thing everyone on here hates. 🤦‍🤣
There is nothing that can function in a computer without algorithms.
New users should be directed to enter topics they want to follow. From there, they can choose people they like, if they even want to.
The issue is people commonly misusing tags on Nostr.

I don't see a real solution to this.
We should call it out when it happens.

@captain ☦️ and I did a livestream talking about this. He made a tool that lets you curate follows for friends you’re onboarding. It would be cool to see more of this and to get a questionnaire + algo to help find good follows instead of de facto king making as you’ve stated
@hodlbod 's invite link for coracle.social has merit, where the invitation link contains a recommended list of people to follow. Other clients could do the same thing. It shifts the "king making" from the client to the individuals who are bringing their people into Nostr, who should know their interests better anyways.
The real king makers are the ones slinging heavy zaps though. Few.
