I definitely want to fix this in damus, but not sure how. I suggested opening the suggestions to the community and have it updated every couple weeks or so.
definitely a combination of creators with: most likes, most zapped, notes/replies activity, tag/mentions -- all of this within a reasonable timeframe.

it's a matter of finding the sweet spot before you can just zap your way in, so a mix of all factors would favor a legit creator.
Problem is most zapped/likes/activity only works with an existing web of trust or else it can be gamed
wash zapping renders it a useless metric
I remember @Mazin built something that associated topics with accounts (I was labeled conspiracy theorist lmfao true) maybe some kind of dvm or special where you pick topics first then it lists users? 🤔

Mazin do you still have this project going?
I’m still playing around with topic classification but it’s on a per note basis and only running on notes sent to nostr.wine atm.

It will mature to something more complete eventually…

A market of algorithms to choose from, with new users able to select randomly 'click in this square, whichever pixel you hit is a discovery algorithm created by someone on nostr.' 'or click in this box for algorithms from your friends and friends of friends' One algorithm could be 'pull all of the last 100 npubs to post in global more than 50 words and less than 250 with no grammatical errors and grab 3 of their friends added long ago. remove anyone that used a cuss word.' list them in order received, then rearrange based on assigning them each a single digit from the latest blockhash. then put them in alphanumeric order based on that assignment. then show all posts by them that have been zapped.' or the proletariat version 'show 100 posts by people who have never been zapped even though they have an attached wallet and don't appear to be often muted' or compare word usage to show similar people or..
or play this game of tetris to generate a seed from which to select a random discovery engine
