I mean, it's easier to load-test Nostr than most other systems because you don't have to create user logins and you can write straight to the data store. You can just use NAK to auto-generate nsecs and go for it. Could generate hundreds of them on your laptop and have them all running a Jenkins script, asynchronously. With a good graphic card, probably thousands of them. Not even just writing to the relays, but fetching, clicking buttons, typing, etc. So, you can load-test the apps, as well, and take down websites.

Why 4chan instead of 8chan? Indeed, Reddit also used to be a free speech platform, for the most part. Also, since they both (allegedly) will comply with US law, it would be nice to have relays in many jurisdiction. That which is illegal in a country is often legal in another and no one jurisdiction is the most permissive in every area.
Here are my 2 cents: From my perspective, public relays fullfil a need for anyone to be able to publish and read posts for free. This is critical for freedom of speech. But they don't need to hold posts forever. A 30 days retention policy would make sense, balancing the service towards freedom of speech with the realities of infrastructure costs. If you want your posts to be available for more than 30 days, then you can pay for-profit relays to archive your content or you can stand up your own relay using your own infrastructure.

This isn't Twitter, relays don't have to be for profit. Allowing everything except for illegal content, spam and content which abuses the technical functionality of the relay (such as, for example, hosting images if only text is allowed) is a good policy. No reason to ban "hate speech" where it's legal. They should be carriers of information, relay as heavily as legally possible on safe harbor provisions, without even scanning for illegal content when it's not mandatory and let users decide what they want to see.
What relays decide to store is their prerogative (especially if they are doing it for free!). It is there right (and duty?) to censor illegal content. One day (soon) I would like my kids to be on Nostr… I would be willing to pay for a clean feed.
I believe Jaf refers to overall protocol safety in regard to mainstream perception. Similar to how Satoshi didn’t want #bitcoin to be thought of as “money for criminals”, especially in the early days. This makes sense as while there aren’t that many relays, clients and especially developers, a coordinated attack from nation states can seriously cripple #Nostr and get many innocent people in trouble. I'm new here, and I'm here mainly in case Telegram gets neutralised by censorship. The chat groups on Telegram seem to police themselves fairly well (against some things; their politics would be relatively obnoxious). But I'm guessing that's a very different model of social media, and it wouldn't work on Nostr?
