These stats are still depressing. I know that running a LN node is not easy but damn. 96% custodial still? https://files.sovbit.host/media/public/0d54812cc6f1d66544fa7c963964227081692a1f0d4898033263a917b6f87089.webp#m=image%2Fwebp&dim=770x960&blurhash=_AAS%5BM%250004%40%5E9%7E7OkOtofwHWAOFogs%3A%3D%7DoI9sM%7Exb%250k97OWr%3B0s8F%7CS%24v%7D53bJ%3FJ%24_NEIvjHaJWBbvs%3BniR*WUMcRkkst3skV%7CRk%3A%7EjYBrkE%23QV%3FOsE%2Ca%23-5t7NuRiWF&x=d4f9171eb02566c2a9267f3d9d925215fa5a85f2e78068501cf654f51c3db0a3
I think a lot of people use custodial wallets for a small amount for zapping and also run their own node. That’s what i do as i am not equipped to host my own domain
I'm not familiar with the state of Umbrel or Start 9 or other popular node implementations but do they offer self-hosted ZAP servers yet? I can understand not spinning up a server if you're not technically inclined But if you're already running a node and there's a one-click option, it's not really that much of an extra step to take. I guess you do need a domain for lnurl soooo mmmmm. Damn. Even a one-click install would I guess take some extra effort and a domain.
i run a lightning node, but i dont want to risk it. so i dont run around with access to my node in my pocket (phone) so i also use these custodian wallets. but if the balance is to high i can send it to my more secure lightning node. thats what i do. there are 20k lightning nodes max. i dont think the private number is very high. i am not surprised by this graph/stats.
We make it easy (at least all the back end install) to run a LN node as everything is installed for the user out of the box. In my opinion, this will help with this custodial issue. Moreover, we need more people making Sovereign Computing easy for everyone.
I still haven't been able to restore access to my own lightning node and sats that went down in ~May 2023. Copying/pasting whole LND directory with original seed on new node didnt do the trick. Experience felt like rugpull technology.
Yeah, I definitely recognize that running a lightning server is tricky. Especially based on the way that lightning is structured. Luckily I didn't have a lot of sats on them but when I was running Umbrel I definitely lost some sats to lightning for having a node nuke.
I think blixt is the best option but still universes away from a normie being able to ( or even most bitcoiners ). But...i fucking love it as my full circle self custodial zapping and receiving zaps option. Only thing its missing is nwc but i can live with that.
Not easy is an understatement. I've lost millions of sats through multiple attempts to go non custodial. Its experimental tech, in an industry that is competitive and hardly anyone is willing to divulge how they run a successful channel. It's not at all worth it for anyone who isn't living off their massive stack they started 13 years ago. Ive opted for liquid instead for fees, utxo management, and built safer than a single instance ruggable custodial. Ill take crap for my decision, but its not for a lack of trying.
Tbh I would love to see some nostr clients adopt some form of XMR based zap equivalent. So much easier to use non-custodial and privately. It’s nice now that Samourai (& others) has recently released the Bitcoin-XMR atomic swaps: https://x.com/samouraidev/status/1747308463762325707?s=46
There is a bounty for a Damus like client that supports xmr.
20 xmr up for grabs https://bounties.monero.social/posts/94/20-991m-nostr-client-for-monero
