 For pro sports, I think it depends.

The Vegas Golden Knights are loved in the city. They do lots of events for the community.

For the Calgary Flames, it isn't so much the team but certain individuals within that organization who do lots for the local community.

It might be a scale issue. It's hard to have a lot of local connections if the city is ultra big. It may be easier for a Jr hockey team in smaller towns to have an impact. 
 Local is key.
