Vast majority of this is people who are terminally ill cancer patients who would suffer a brutal death. The news reports the crazy outliers to make it seem much more dystopian than it is. Had a family member who faced this decision and it was much more humane than what cancer had in store for them.
I read the report further and it did seem that way as far as the larger trends were reported. Mostly older and terminally ill. Which I agree is more humane. I’ve seen people die sick slow deaths from cancer and dementia and wished they could be put down humanely. We do it for our pets… The report states “in 2022, 463 MAID provisions were individuals whose natural deaths were not reasonably foreseen.” So 3.5% of total MAID cases.
That's why I'm on the fence with this. I can see and appreciate the potential this has for personal control of outcomes and quality of life. Especially when coupled with hospice/palliative care. My concern is state involvement and if it's pushed at all. Not a Canadian and not familiar with this program or that healthcare system. Just interested
