Experiencing nostr regularly through an algo feed has nearly ZERO appeal to me. They can be useful so it’s probably good that they’re being experimented with, and crucial that they’re only optional, but the experience itself just isn’t enjoyable to me the same way a real-time feed of the people I choose to follow is enjoyable. You guys are my algo and I’m loving it. 💜🤙
Yep, yep... Discoverability is important but the self-curated feed is far superior. I also appreciate the current legwork needed for someone to build an audience. It shows they care. Most of the trending type stuff is really only useful to me for a quick catch-up, almost like scanning news headlines. Trying to use those as default changed how I interact too, which was an interesting realization. I am finding value in nostr:nprofile1qqsfnw64j8y3zesqlpz3qlf3lx6eutmu0cy6rluq96z0r4pa54tu5eqpz9mhxue69uhkummnw3ezuamfdejj7qghwaehxw309aex2mrp0yh8qunfd4skctnwv46z7qg4waehxw309ahx7um5wghx77r5wghxgetk9ux2gj7s 's 'one per follow' dvm feed and nostr:nprofile1qqsw2feday2t6vqh2hzrnwywd9v6g0yayejgx8cf83g7n3ue594pqtcpz4mhxue69uhk2er9dchxummnw3ezumrpdejqzythwden5te0dehhxarjxgcjucm0d5q32amnwvaz7tmjv4kxz7fwd4hhxarj9ec82csvvl4vs 's experimental WoT list. They are complete opposite ends of the spectrum, with my personally built timeline being my happy middle. And! It's so easy to shift up your experience when something feels off. That's an underrated quality of the lack of algos imho. No sticky ickies 😅
That's btw a perfect use for algos. To catch up. Or to see something you didn't know. I use my timed ordered feed 95% of the time and I hope to keep it this way. But sometimes it's nice to see what you missed while you were offline (asleep or something like this) or just what's interesting.
Where algos help us find what we want when we want it, i think they’re beneficial. New users, discoverability, finding particular content, etc. But I absolutely love the “in the moment” nature of the chronological, follows-only feed. It is more like real life interactions. In real life if i miss something with my friends/family, someone will fill me in on the most important part and if it’s worth learning more about it I’ll dig into it. Otherwise, whatever happens or is discussed when I’m not with them is nothing I even think about. On Nostr, if I’m offline for the day and something big goes down, I’ll probably hear about it from reposts, etc. If it’s important enough then i can dig into it. Otherwise, I don’t need to bother myself trying to keep up with everything everyone talked about while I was offline. I just pick up wherever things are when I log back on.
The algo feed is only useful to find the people you want to add to your personal feed. It is more useful when you are new to Nostr than once you've made good connections.
