What is #meshtastic everyone keeps talking about?
Like a decentralized wireless radio? Like ham radio, but digital?
🤔

Non licensed off grid texting… think of CB radio only text based that uses each radio as a repeater as well so if you get a few high enough that their radio waves are not disrupted, you can reach across states
So, like, decentralized pagers
I guess, I wasn’t cool enough to have a pager… even though I tried like hell to win one of them Mt. Dew pagers back in the day
Is it a US only thing?
No I’ve seen people in the UK posting about them also
for adoption in your area check this: https://meshtastic.liamcottle.net/
Thanks 👍
sure :)
btw - if there is nothing visible in your area, it does not mean there is noone there - this map can see only users that share their location to the mesh. Also someone in the area has to upload to mqtt.
Better then pagers because you can text back and forth. Also messages are encrypted. Its a lot light the lightning network, messages hop from node to node to reach there destination. The bigger the network the more reliable it becomes.
Get a node and play around with it. It’s relatively cheap hardware. The more nodes the better it works.

🤣and I’m such a noob that just playing with both of mine, I didn’t realize they send emojis
Kinda wanna get into it
It's just text tho
Oh? Is limited on the types I data it can send?
Guessing it’s a bit slow.
From what I know, it's just text and emojis. I think you can share files
And I’ve heard that people have used raspberry pi to add message boards and I believe they figured out lightning transactions over it also
If you can connect it to a raspberry pi, you can connect it to a lightning node 👍
Pretty dope
I have an old raspi3 I could repurpose for this.
Plenty of places you can read up on how to setup a lightning node on rpi
Sure is, I already run one on a pi
So you're using nostr:nprofile1qqsyv47lazt9h6ycp2fsw270khje5egjgsrdkrupjg27u796g7f5k0spzemhxue69uhk2er9dchxummnw3ezumrpdejz7qgwwaehxw309ahx7uewd3hkctcprdmhxue69uhkummnw3ez6vfwde3x7tnpdenkzmnf9e3k75xqss4 hub, I suppose
Alby hub is connected to my node, but I’ve been using thunderhub to manage my node since before alby hub and still use that more.
But I’m still a rookie with meshtastic so I haven’t tried building one on a pi yet
I’d like to play in this rabbit hole… where to start? Non technical noob 😬

I first heard about it a month ago on @jackspirko's podcast and since have tried to digest what I could from other sources too, I see @mrecheese 🧀 is doing a hive talk about flashing them tonight, but a good place to start looking is fresnomesh.org
