Rural kids move up the income spectrum faster than urban kids. 21st Century cities are just bad. https://image.nostr.build/8b6597ff6b180880ac82332a8eecb34c888f0d8d239fe9a75fc3741f78da06cc.jpg
Flint? Interesting
This data is moot. Good jobs in the cities are taken by commuters from rural areas. Agreed cities are bad, but this data is misleading.
Why is the data moot? Here’s the paper, https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0276562423000884 It’s a sample of 20,000 American’s the data is from Opportunity Insights (Chetty et al., 2018)
cities are noisy, dirty, dangerous and barren. without the natural energy of trees and such, it’s more difficult to thrive.
More dangerous/expensive for a kid to be gaining independence. Can't walk/bike anywhere alone, less open spaces. If there would be a metric for the time the kid spends in front of the TV/PC, that might be even more striking correlation with earning potential.
yeah, too much internet or screens is probably not great for mental calmness, clarity or developing a healthy sense of self. i’m sure there are some great cities that are clean & peaceful with easy access to nature; those are cities i wouldn’t mind living in. maybe vancouver, toronto…? nordic cities? i dunno tho never been…😅 seoul is clean & safe w pockets of nature including a river through it & easy access out to rural areas, but it’s also a gigantic metropolis with tall buildings everywhere.
