Noticed this magnificent butternut tree while hanging out at a party

I couldn't resist picking up some butternuts from this tree after spending some time admiring it at a baby shower I was attending. The people that lived there had no idea that the nuts were edible.

I plan to plant half and try out dehydrating and roasting some in the shell. In the past, I've just cracked the fresh shell with a vice but hopefully after roasting or dehydrating the shells get a little easier to crack in a less labor intensive way.

Morning! Do the hulls stain your fingers like black walnuts do?
I don't think it's that bad. I've not really bothered with black walnuts but I've heard they stain.
Yes they do. Fun fact. The outer flesh of the black walnut, mixed with water and poured on the ground will make earthworms come straight out of the ground. Great way to collect fish bait 😉
That's amazing! Some people boil the hulls and use it as a earth tone color dye. A tinchure of hulls is medicinal.
I've only had butternut a few times. A pain to get the meat out but probably one of the richest buttery nuts I've ever tasted
