 - You are sending/receiving bitcoin, not “sats”
- The asset is bitcoin, the most well-know asset in the world, the symbol should be there
- Sats is very confusing if you’re new to bitcoin. Easy to confuse the asset and unit if you're new. Good to know you have bitcoin and learn more than think you have sats
- There is zero confusion even if you can’t keep pre/suffixes straight since there is a 100m difference in value (if there is then that’s a good problem to have)
- ₿ looks way better than “sats” and is already is a symbol that exists everywhere

Sats is one of the worst UX mistakes in bitcoin, so open to other ideas, just trying one out!
Thoughts on using ₿ as a suffix for notation instead of using "sats"?

100₿ = 100 sats

That ship has sailed, sir. Sats, the standard.
I don't think there is a sats symbol that is widely used and certainly not one that you can type here. We would use the ₿ symbol, the unit would still be sats.
Just because there isn't a standard UTF-8 symbol (yet) doesn't mean ₿ is the correct answer either.
₿ is widely known to refer to Bitcoin, not sats.

You're, at this point in time, more prone to find someone that knows the symbol depicted below to mean sats, than ₿ - That's the current reality, that's how things evolved, for better or worse.
I think it's one of those "pick your battles" situations - Given how entrenched it is at this point, it's worth really asking yourself what has more worth - Fighting against this particular current, or putting energy into things that improve the current UX landscape.

Well-known sats symbol, as used in Snort.social:

Yea good points. From my bubble, my friends / target users have no idea what a sat is, but they all know what bitcoin is, so i'd rather send them the asset then send them a unit name and explain the asset. I still think its very very early when thinking in unit terms and most people just look at the dollar equivalent value of bitcoin they own.
I think there's also a perspective worth evaluating whereby trying to explain unknown stuff, we over-complicate in the process.
In that regard, if we want to keep it as simple as possible, the explanation/comparison of Bitcoin to the Dollar and sats to the cents (or whichever fiat currency they are familiar with), is in that context an extremely easy one for a new user to grasp because it conjoins the familiar with the unknown.
And maybe, that's all we really need.

It just needs to be clear when a user is onboarded (Note, I don't think we need to SHOW the fiat value, just convey the comparison).
Also worth noting as Bitcoin's value rises, sats may also be less and less attainable - And I think that's where your thinking comes in of keeping to a singular name which is understandable - Keep it simple, whilst allowing expansion.

I think it'll be a wait and see game, because sats really did gain a lot of traction with the introduction of Lightning, and rightly so.

And personally I think all this will come very very naturally - Up until relatively recently, the bitcoin unit was very attainable by the average person. In the present, not so much, and yet we're seeing more and more adoption - A string being pulled in seemingly opposite directions. It'll work out in the end.
If you’re dealing with sats, I think it should say sats. If you’re trying to help the noobs out, at least provide the option to change to unit display. My 2 sats. 😎
I am with fiatj on this one, found it confusing when I used broadwalk the first timr

I still hear new users saying they can never afford 1 Bitcoin, not knowing it is 100,000,000 sats

Not sure what the answer is here, you are free to build broadwalk how ever you like

Thx for the feedback. Yea i hear that too, which is the hurdle i'm trying to overcome with this notation. You can send 100₿ and the user knows its bitcoin and he know he didn't just receive $10m, so he does more research, learns about units and symbols and then buys more.
That'd be very confusing as this is the unit symbol for 1 BTC which is 100 m sats.
 Just zapped you 420₿! 😉
That's very generous of you. 😂
What about the three line 'pancake' stack symbol?
 https://satsymbol.com/

i like it, but didn't get adopted by any wallets that i know of
 I appreciate the reasoning.
 $
I dont know. Something tells me if people can understand dollars and cents they can understand bitcoin and satoshis. Not a perfect comparison obviously.

I may be overestimating.
Maybe but dollars have a 200 year head start... and you can express both with the $ symbol. why not express both with the ₿ symbol? the issue is the insane number of decimal places in bitcoin, so that is why i used the placement of the ₿ to denote unit.
Fair point for $ vs ₿.

I do think another issue worth talking about is the moving target of Bitcoins value, which to me is related to the number of decimals. This will have an impact long term and oddly makes ₿ make more sense to my eyes & brain.

At a price of $10 million USD in todays dollars 10 satoshis is 1 dollar. The question in my mind is when do more decimals become needed for daily transactions. If its not in our lifetime then ₿ still has some friction for me mentally. If its in our lifetime and there can be 1000.23 ₿ then I'm onboard(walk).

Tldr: the lack of decimals with satoshis prevents me from enjoying ₿ as the satoshi denomination.
I don't disagree with anything you just said, but I think the solution you're trying is potentially even more confusing. I don't have a better idea.
 Yup this is confusing
Yea not sure what the best solution is, but feels important to include the ₿ somewhere. We can also show the USD equivalent amount in the UI or let you toggle to sats. We'll test it out and share feedback.
Using doggie coin instead is a better idea imo
₿ for bitcoin $ for sats, the $ symbol is ours now
Stop thinking. I do it like everyone else
@boardwalk is the only thing with this confusing nonsense. Time has been invested into educating people that sats are fractions of a bitcoin and that they don’t have to buy the whole coin.

Doing it “your way” now just adds to the confusion.
Fwiw, this isn't exclusive to broadwalk

oh wow, never saw this before! similar points, but they keep the ₿ at the front, I like it better at the end so its a little different. thx.
Yeah, putting it at the end is an interesting differentiation, maybe too subtle...
Also if the goal is to make people feel richer because big number:

Just use n₿ for nanobitcoin, this gives 10x more big number than sats
