Open Source is the secret of my success. Every great opportunity I've ever had was the result of Open Source. I skipped all the job interviews. I contributed patches and they hired me on the spot. I built open source and they found me. Without it, I would be just a regular man with precious ideas. Ideas aren't precious, no matter how good they are. Even the best creations aren't precious on their own. You could die an unknown Shakespeare. OPPORTUNITIES are precious. Open Source maximizes opportunities. People are resistant to it because they're afraid. Their heads are full of doubts, of tropes like "how will artists make money?" For that reason, brave people are able to benefit from Open Source while fearful people don't. If you want to be a successful software person and you're not already a millionaire, I would highly recommend building Open Source software.
 Amazing! #OpenSource ✊
I 100% believe that an average young tech person would be better off: (a) skipping college, (b) contributing to open-source

....and I don't mean 25% better off, but orders of magnitude more success.
 Well put

Building things in public is the best route you can choose.

In the offline world, your products can't sell without your showroom.

Presenting your ideas in real form is the only option to get attention.

The same goes with Content, doesn't matter how well you study or research and put your words in sweet format.

If you are not posting online then you will not receive any attention and feedback.

Doesn't matter if you write effective code or creative content you should present it in the real world to get rewards.

I know many Shakespeare who are great writers but are afraid of posting their stuff online.

Great reminder @Alex Gleason
 HW too!
Interesting view, I always thought open source work is paid worse than working on the secret sauce of a company? Or do you view open source only as entry point to well paid positions?
I'm interested in doing open source for a living but am a bit afraid of earning way less than just building a career in a big tech
How about open sourcing the software and play some karate, kid?

+
The more I do Open Source, the more I discover this is true.

And I personally found that the easiest way to get started (for those who have never contributed to Open Source) is to find a project you both like and use, go to their Github page, and find issues tagged with “Good first issue” or similar.
As I have recently be looking for work, so many corporate web-dev positions require knowledge of almost exclusively oss stacks. I wonder how many companies are/aren't donating.
This is the way. Seems way too obvious to be a statement of value but way too many people still don’t get it.
Spread the word brother. This is a good message.
Opportunities don’t knock on your door, the second time around! Seize the moment
 Thanks, I needed that.
 Agree 💯
