WOW I AM FEELING VERY MELANCHOLY AFTER HEARING @ODELL ON CITADEL TALK ABOUT BIG RELAYS LIKE PRIMAL BEING ABLE TO REMAIN FREE BY FUNDING THEMSELVES WITH COCA-COLA AND BIG BUSINESS ANALYTICS AND CAMPAIGNS. MAYBE I AM JUST REGARDED THINKING THERE WAS ANOTHER WAY? WILL BIG FREE RELAYS WHERE YOU ARE THE PRODUCT BE THE ONLY NOSTR RELAYS SOMEDAY? ONLY TIME AND YOUR CHOICES WILL TELL.
Is that rip out? Dident catch it live.
Same.
Yeah it's out
Im not understanding why we can’t make it kinda like Wikipedia which runs on public donations and effort ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Building a good decentralized, distributed system takes some serious engineering skill. For the rest of you there's this: nostr:note1h0un80snqg99yj35rxrpzuc6p2xq0de2589seayexhfa9nc4jkhsx09c5y
IF THERE IS JUST ONE RELAY OPERATOR PER 10,000 PEOPLE OR SO, AND CLIENTS USE AN OUTBOX MODEL, NOBODY WILL HAVE TO PAY ANYTHING EXVEPT THOSE FEW PEOPLE DONATING CHEAP VMS
YES, I USED TO AGREE, BUT GOSSIP OUTBOX DOES NOT SUPPORT PAID RELAYS AT THIS TIME. IT IS FREE RELAYS ONLY. THIS MEANS, SMOL OPERATORS EITHER HAVE TO RUN A FREE RELAY AND BE ATTACKED BY MALICIOUS BOTS ALL THE TIME OR GIVE UP AND SEND EVERYONE TO A BIG FREE RELAY.
Is adding support for paid relays possible, just not currently implemented? Don't understand the technical underpinnings and trying to learn.
I think so yes. I am formulating a new nip in my head as we speak..
Actually yeah I sat down and tried to write a spec and I realized it's not gossip that will be preventative here.. it's just clients need to be more like nostrudel showing relay information when gossiping and show the users more information about read/write failures when they encounter relays with access control lists that follows have in their relay lists 🧠 LFG
yes, this is why i keep on hammering away at the NIP-42 problem also the activity log of nostrudel is a model that everyone should be following... coracle shows you this information briefly but there's no way to see it once you miss it and yes, paid relays could totally allow access to messages in which the matching pubkey appears without a subscription, this is kinda necessary i think
