All of my major platforms and services are so inundated with spam now that they are becoming worthless.

I get flooded with spam phone calls now. I literally get 10 before noon every single day. To the point that I just don’t answer my phone and it’s permanently on silent or I can’t even record the podcast. Thus, the very tool I use to stay in touch with people has become increasingly non viable for that very purpose.

Seriously, how do we fix this shit. It’s fucking astonishingly bad
nsec > verify your account with your phone number.

Cell service as we know it is becoming an antiquated technology. It won't be long before phones as we know them stop functioning entirely as a telephone of old and that particular set of problems will be replaced with new (hopefully technically solvable) problems.
It might already exist, I'm not sure... But couldn't we just have voice calls on Nostr? Individuals could input a minimum sats payment for others to call them. The payment friction would likely remove all spam.
The problem is that basically 2 people of my entire contact list is on Nostr. Would love to use alert or Nostr obviously, but the network is the problem rather than the tech in that regard.
That's fair. I have no one in my phone contact list on Nostr. Part of me wonders however, if removing spam calls is the "killer app" that would onboard new people.
Build more use cases and the network problem resolves itself. Networks increase exponentially
Seems to keep coming back to the idea of web of trust for me. For instance, my phone is permanently set to send anyone not in my contacts directly to voicemail. It's the only way I maintain sanity from the spam calls. Would be interesting if I could set a "degrees of separation" to also allow people that know the people in my contacts, but that raises privacy implications too.
This post made me take a moment to reflect on how much of my life is full of spam. Turns out, it's a fuck ton.

So much noise distracts us from productivity.
 Try out Vida.io

Uses ai to block calls, is a life saver
I'll check that out as well. I use something called Jolly Roger telephone company to help filter spam and it seems to do a pretty good job but it's not perfect. I wonder if the AI is more accurate.
Glad that you're here and we can read your posts man. Fuck twitterx
I’m always getting weird text messages they never stop
Google Voice/Google Fi, sadly, is actually kinda decent at spam blocking.
That is very sad if Google is my best option - but I appreciate the info for having it in my list… at the bottom. 😆
 Yea, basically
I use Nomorobo for spam calls; it works great.

My issue is that I'm sensitive to whatever it is that causes my hands to ache while on and after I use my phone. It's awful.
SimpleX works pretty good, but my family is tired of downloading new apps.
I think this is a good solution:

Strange..... I rarely have spam calls these days.
The Grapevine allows your web of trust to calculate influence scores (that are NOT proportional to follower counts; see my article on that), the purpose of which is to help you decide who is worthy of your attention for any given context. It will allow you to set threshold default scores for users. If spam is not a problem, set the defaults so you can read or listen to what anyone and everyone has to say. If spam is a problem, dig into the control panel, find the slide bar, and adjust the defaults to screen your content as rigorously as necessary.

I have the protocol and an initial proof of concept for curation of lists. Just gotta build it out more, that's all.

 luckily, you still have #nostr
I don't have this issue anymore but I used to. May I suggest using the mobile phone for only phone purposes. Calls/text only, maybe light web browsing and GPS if you have to. Moving all coms and such to a computer? IMO There are also so many lifestyle benefits to removing non-essential coms to a dedicated space. Its been huge for me. If there is anything I want to lookup or remember for later, I write it in a notes app I just check before I sit down. It can be alot of work, but it really keeps me acting with intent.
simple approach is to change your number and or email every few years - that *seems* like a big deal but each "renewal/reset" you get to choose what you carry fwd and the rest falls away 🙂 🙃
Yeah I do this with my computers… maybe I should be thinking about this for my phone number and contact info too? 🤔
Switch platforms to allow-list models instead of block/deny lists.
Then you can't discover new content.
Its so bad I don't even use my phone number for anything anymore. Only for some 2FA codes when its needed.

The phone system is completely broken!
If it's any consolation, this will happen with nostr too and even faster than your other platforms.

And this is how it begins:
