I just can't help but think this could turn out to be a terrible ,strategic error. Whoever gets appointed will essentially be viewed as the incumbent and statistically, the incumbent has the advantage toward a win.
I just looked up Feinstein's last election and she won by 8 pts, which to me, seems a little close for left leaning California and a senator who had been there since 1992.
