Nostr cant die.
The others can die, and eventually will do so as their centralized companies decide to sunset the services or go bankrupt.
Nostr on the other hand, as a protocol, can persist indefinitely, even if it is just niche. It may not look the same years from now, but I hope the spirit does.

it will always be niche in my opinion because it requires a bit of effort. Like holding Bitcoin is niche because it requires a bit of effort and a lot of belief. Same with being successful, it's niche to be successful at something because it requires some effort

Maybe, but the effort now vs when I first started using Nostr is a lot less in my opinion. I couldn't stand it at first, but I was able to about a year later and even went Nostr only in that time. So 3 years from now may be tolerable for a lot more people. Plus, a company could make it a lot easier by managing nsecs, for example. People could signup with an email and password or whatever like normal and have it tied to an nsec. Defeats the point, in my opinion, but it could be a way Nostr grows. The niche aspect then would just people who take self-custody by creating their own keys offline or something like that. Bitcoin isn't so niche anymore. Holding your own keys still is though.
Fair enough. in the fact the analogy of self custodial nostr v email & password nostr is a good one.
That’s what’s holding me to be honest. I would like to safely take care of the nsec as to not loose some time and effort. So far I’m not really a tweetering person so I’m not too concerned. But I see nostr and want to be a part of it. Just the fact that I can loose any amount of sats here keeps me up wondering. I sure wish to have my nsec on a hardware wallet.
Sats aren't really tied to Nostr unless you're using a built in wallet that is somehow tied to your nsec. You can use external wallets for zapping if you want (Amethyst allows this) or don't use zaps at all if you're still too concerned. I just throw some play sats into a hot wallet and forget about it. Whatever amount is comfortable
The idea is to be mindful, but not so afraid that you're paralyzed and don't utilize the tech.
One benefit that I don't see talked about much is the ability to fork it if things do go sideways. You can't just fork the Twitter network, but you can fork the Nostr protocol and have access to both sides if you really want to. Those who don't like the direction can fork off and be happy. Not perfect, but still better than legacy.
