Yes and no. There is some legit great cosplay. But... People act differently.  

 Like the anime characters they're dressed up as? 

 Yes,but also masks come off when masks or makeup or costumes go on. 

 It is also the normies not knowing WTF to do with all these weirdos.

 Both. 

 I don't have a full understanding of it either. I always presumed that it was just for the contests. 

 Nope. Not many are good enough for that. Most do without of sheer love and dedication.

 Yeah. I don't begrudge them anything. It is just that many are too weird for anything resembling normal human interactions. 

 It pretty wild,  but, I respect the amount of work needed to pull off some of the looks.
