I don't have a full understanding of it either. I always presumed that it was just for the contests. 

 Nope. Not many are good enough for that. Most do without of sheer love and dedication.

 Yeah. I don't begrudge them anything. It is just that many are too weird for anything resembling normal human interactions. 

 It pretty wild,  but, I respect the amount of work needed to pull off some of the looks.
