 Once, I asked a friend of mine from U.S. to list the Axis countries. He mentioned Germany, the USSR, Italy, and Japan.

 not surprising.  in America kids do not learn about Soviet Union's role in WW2.  just like in Soviet Union kids never learned about America's role.  it would be too confusing given the Cold War that followed.
