Alas, the people in Donbas oblast saw this and assumed that Russia would step in and 'save them' if they too rebelled and sought autonomy from Ukraine. This historically stems from Soviet Union era and the fractualsiation of states into smaller cultural identity states. Russia deems itself as some "grand protector" helping those who want to separate do so. In 2015 Russia sanctioned the Ukrainian military, thus stopping ammo and spares for the military. In 2016 the stopped the gas (some what reluctantly). in 2017 we saw a lot of violence. 2018 was also a little brutal but Ukraine was running out of supplies.
