Nostr + Bitcoin gives small, independent artists (i.e., most artists) back control of their voice and audience online. It is not the super famous mainstream artists who will flock to nostr, at least initially. They enjoy the benefits of the large, algorithmic, ad-driven platforms. It is the small artists, who cannot feasibly compete for attention on those platforms, who need nostr and bitcoin, and will continue turning to it as they see how transformative it is in connecting with their audience and monetizing their content.

Hey Dan! It would be awesome to do it in El Salvador, but perhaps that's too far/remote/expensive for most normies? And wintertime in El Salvador would make sense for northern hemisphere folks, but that would mean I'd have to organize it within ~3-4 months and maybe that's too quick?

Personally, I wouldn't go because I don't have the sats to spend on a trip that far away. I'd also give yourself at least a 6 month window as well. Small artist will arrive to nostr also because is the only way in which they can monetize something on social medias. Big accounts earn through referrals, sponsor and so on, small accounts don’t.

I think that’s what he was saying, I don’t want to speak for him. The way I read it was that small accounts will fare better monetizing on nostr, because large accounts on other platforms earn revenue from referrals, sponsorships, ads, etc. But it’s possible I read too much into it.

Is there a way to put content behind a paywall on nostr? I'm no fan of paywalls, but specifiable rates could entice more businesses and artists to use nostr. Imagine putting a hashtag on some notes that specify that it can only move across a relay if a payment is made - that would allow artists to post like normal but also put their paid content in followers' feeds, while not bothering people who follow but don't subscribe. I remember how Twitter was really pushed by businesses on their old platforms before most casual twitter people started using it. Same effect could happen here. But if Twitter becomes a blue wechat first, the opportunity will be missed.

The only serious attempt I’ve seen is https://creatr.nostr.wine . I am not in favor of using paywalls this way, however, so I cannot speak to how effective it has been as I have not tried it. I think @𝕾𝖊𝖗 𝕾𝖑𝖊𝖊𝖕𝖞 tried it at one time. Maybe he has some insight.

Most artists aim to get their art seen, make art to express themselves and do it as a hobby. Nostr is still in its early days, so the amount of zaps represents that. As Nostr grows, the best artists will gain the most followers, and will also get an increase in zaps along with that. It's going to be a grind at the moment, but stick with it, because you have the advantage of being seen and getting ahead. 🖼️🎨

A key point that makes nostr different is that even if nostr was huge, a niche artist with a relatively small audience could still easily monetize their content immediately among those who like their work. That’s not even possible at all on other platforms that have the power to play gatekeeper, and set minimum requirements on views/listens/followers before you are “eligible” to monetize.
