The actual mechanics of complying with this supposed norm are dizzyingly impractical. Which aspect of a post might strike people as uninteresting? Through which lenses might they not want to learn about what I'm writing? Crafting hashtags for discoverability is one thing, but for *anti*-discoverability? Am I to red-team my own posts? I receive these cheerful suggestions any time I write anything that’s widely-boosted. I've ignored them so far, and intend to continue to ignore them.
@b57823a9 is it possible some of that is being on a large instance? I've definitely had posts that were popular and I have never had anybody tell me to use hashtags and I rarely use them myself. Or maybe it's just that you work for the government and people think your posts are government related as a result? I'd be curious to know more.
@b57823a9 a lot of people I follow participate in monsterdon, and I do not. They use the hashtag to communicate with and find each other, and I block it so that my timeline doesn't get overwhelmed with posts about it.
