I just don't buy the silence of the main character.

Which is like... The whole thing about the movie🤷🏽

I understand he's a quiet strong type, but like that first date would've never worked saying literally 2 words during irl🤷🏽

Just pulls me out of it quick.

Like that scene in pulp fiction with they talk about awkward vs comfortable silence? You don't have to talk when you're comfortable with each other... BUT THEY MET LIKE 5 MINS AGO

But again I get that, that's just me 🤷🏽

I can see why it's good. I just don't buy it.
I get where you're coming from. But, I've been on dates with women who are as equally quiet as me. There is a distinct type of chemistry that comes from people who share that quality. A rare type of comfort.
 I feel that.

But I also bet you say more than. "Hey." "Get in."

Then "see you round" during the whole date🤷🏽
That's true. We still gotta get to know each other. But... it's just a movie. It ain't meant to be realistic.
 True.

Still bothers me 🤷🏽
Yea, I get it. It’s a small leap of faith. It’s also part of the strong silent type motif of noir cinema so I eat it up.
But... the strong silent type is not just a stereotype.
Agreed. I was raised by one. Also with a waman that is quiet like me. I’m very attracted to less is more.
 Less. But still SOMETHING
Yes, the SOMETHING was his action.
 Mmmmmm

Ok I'll give you that one.

But I still think any woman in close proximity to him irl would be attracted for the first hour or so until the date went like that. Then they would lose that number quick in fear he was done perv, it serial killer, or what have you. Pretty damn fast your mind starts running why is he like this, what is he thinking.

I just can't see it.

I will suspend my disbelief to extend measures. I love scifi and fantasy and all sorts.

But I can't see a guy who doesn't communicate getting anywhere in life realistically with the amount that he was in that film.

Even obvious creeps like Dahmer has to say things to lure people back to his place🤷🏽
From my experience, the men who have to boast about having "confidence" usually have the least... if any. 🤷‍♂️
 Oooh facts.

But I still stand by that they would say SOMETHING🤷🏽

To which Driver says and does nothing🤷🏽
He does a lot. He drives, robs banks and sacrifices himself to save the girl.
 True.

But like. Small things. Human interpersonal relationship things.

If he's going to be silent. It's he grabbing her hand to reassure her? Hugging her? Body language?

Nah he's a robot except for in the car.
But it’s imperative that he stay anon. He’s afraid of revealing.
Yeah but. Like. I dunno you would think alone he would open up.

Or to have an actual character arc it would be something like she got him too open up and to surreal. She's the only one that could or something🤷🏽
 I submit as evidence: https://image.nostr.build/fdcb587be7158fa63edce337e9be807980db4264867c7d41dfc66dc9d74f5c76.gif
You're right. I change my mind completely because I'm this angle he looks kind of like he's smiling even though thats most likely eisenstein's theory of montage juxtaposition at work🤷🏽
 Ironically though @DonkHODL🗿🌽🦨 @Gary ₿usey

Same actor, same director totally different outcome.

I would say they are spectacular together in Only God Forgives.

It didn't do as well as Drive. But I think it's miles better in comparison🤷🏽

Ya see I'm the opposite. I hated Only God Forgives. Sadistic trash, imo. 🤷‍♂️
I mean. It's not Oscar worthy.

But there's actual characters with arcs and events that flow in a real world. Which again I think it's miles away from Drive 🤷🏽🤣
Can’t remember if I’ve seen this yet. I will try to watch with all this in mind tho.
 😁😁

I'd love to know your opinion when you do.

Thanks for arguing with me about drive. It was fun.
It's not just about him being afraid, though. Dude... he's a criminal. His whole characterization is him being an anti-hero.
Honestly, I also think he's autistic.
 I've wondered that.
He's very awkward when he interacts with other characters. At least, when it comes to emotional situations. But when it comes to practical matters, like that scene when he kills those two hitmen in the motel, he's very focused and doesn't seem to be bothered, at all.
That could make it make sense for me.

But it doesn't mean I'll be able to sit through the movie🤣
 Robot-autist

Maybe it's a prequel to the RoboCop universe

 Lol! What is this?!
It's the song I think of when I think of Ryan Gosling. Mostly when I think of drive, but wherever he's being a robot.

Listen to the lyrics

Lol. You're clearly not a Ryan Gosling fan.
 I like gosling.

I just don't like when directors use him as eye candy with no substance 🤷🏽

I'd actually counter what you said with saying I just hate Drive🤷🏽

I don't think there's an actual story there. Or maybe if they tooled with his character it would work for me.

But in a few movies gosling could be replaced with a plank of wood and it wouldn't change anything🤷🏽
 That's a fair point.

I liked The Place Beyond the Pines and Crazy, Stupid, Love.
Lars and the real girl? Half nelson, fracture,

I never saw the notebook, but that's kind on everyone's lists of movies
You’re gonna need your suspension of disbelief powers set on 11 for the notebook. 🤣
 Lol yeah??

All I know is the meme

I want this movie to end!
 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

That's the kind of shit I yell during drive
 LOL

I’m mad as hell and I’m not gonna take it anymore!!!
 That gets zapped
One of the best lines ever.
 Fantastic film. Best scene!
Such an important message
 FOR REAL
Lars and the Real Girl definitely felt unique. I recommend watching Blue Valentine.
Oh shit I forgot about Blue Valentine! He was in that huh

I felt bad for couples when that movie came out thinking it was going to be a lovey dovey date movie
Nah, but it was nice to see a movie that did it's best to depict a realistic portrayal of a relationship.
 Realistic though🤷🏽

That's sticking point for my brain in this thread🤣
As I said, it "did it's best". 🤷‍♂️
I mean... let's be honest, all relationships are dysfunctional to a degree.
Facts. But not necessarily on film
Can't argue with that. Movies always romanticize relationships.
 Hmmmm
 Yes?

The problem i’m having is i can’t think of a specific example, all that comes to mjnd is requiem for a dream, which is partially romanticized

But i am quite certain some movies are all about fucked up af relationships
Okay, but not all relationships are like that. Every couple fights.

And Requiem for a Dream! 👀 That movie was about the effects that drug addiction has on relationships, not relationships in general.
 True
 There's definitely a few

 Dude, what is a Sigma?
 Lone Wolf

Alpha beta

Sigma. The outlier do your own thing.
 So... every bitcoin hodler?
 Lol yes
Again, there is a special type of chemistry that comes from two strong silent types being together. LOL! I'm not saying that we're mutes. But, you get my point.
No no I totally get that.

I just would/have already argued that you still have to have some base level which I feel he didn't.

And if you're saying 2 string silent types fit together to have comfortable silence I would also argue Irene is in NO WAY a strong silent type.

Her whole dynamic was begging without saying it aloud. She was wanton. She would have craved for him to even say her name once more.
Yeah be l but even the most hardboiled noir string silent types had dialogue 🤷🏽 and even more so they had inner monologues so we knew how they felt about the world🤷🏽

I feel like Drive was a movie made because of the trope of Ryan Gosling 🤷🏽

Ryan Gosling himself even said for a long time up until they movie he felt like his roles were often "a robot shell of a man experiencing feelings through others reactions to him" and I think Nicholas Wendigo Refn was like... Actually.... Yeah.... Let's make you do nothing a whole movie and see if people sit through it.
Paul Chain’s ‘Fast One’ (the novel that solidified the hardboiled genre)
Is extremely terse.

Also I view this flick in the pulp/comic book realm of reality which makes it more reasonable.
 That's an interesting angle. Comics.

But still for film. It just irks me.

Every 5 minutes in that movie I can't help but scream AND THEN WHAT
Lol I can’t suspend disbelief long enough to get thru more than 5 mins of most fantasy (esp LOTR) so I get it.
Lol I literally typed the opposite just now
 🤣 just saw dat
Great minds think exactly the same but totally different 🤣🤣🤣

Appreciate you donk
