I often lecture people on the fact that these applications are designed to maximize the value of reactions, almost to an arbitrarily silly extent, such that you can game the default human-computer interaction that occurs. 

 In 2004 there was a big Madison Ave marketing meeting.  All the major firms participated.  The agreement they came to, "bring it all down to the 5th grade level".

That is a true story, not something I made up.  Why?  Because most people are idiots and it works is why.   So it is natural YouTubers figured it out too.
