What does this mean for the user? Direct exposure to Google?
Invidious frontends by default do not proxy the videos. It gets the source video URL directly from Google. Some instances will allow you to proxy but need to manually set it.

Piped always does this, but there are still other merits to using Invidious depending on the situation (for example Piped requires JS while Invidious does not, and Invidious also works far better on Tor Browser).
Appreciate the info. I mostly use the NewPipe app and only recently discovered Invidious. I'll just use Piped if I have reason to access on desktop.
Seems like piped.video is a better option if you want to avoid Google entirely.

I also recommend the NewPipe app

As in, no privacy or anonymity?
You can run your own on Umbrel.
Does that eliminate the issue? Wouldn't Invidious still need to source the content from Google servers?
 Yes. Maybe I misunderstood.
