It's certainly a striking photo. Maybe an extremely hot fire due to duff buildup as a result of fire suppression for many years? This may be followed by topsoil loss from erosion when it rains.

Sad view, and though not fire related, it's sadly also a growing reality in parts of Germany (e.g. Bavarian Forest, Harz Mountains). Main culprits here are drought conditions, groundwater deficits, weakened tree health and resulting bark beetle infestations to finish them off...
