 Timeline is inherently friend-filtered, but for notifications and DMs there is a button in the top right:

You almost never need this though unless you are the target of a spam attack like my account and others at the moment.

 I use hey.com for that exact purpose. You have to screen email addresses in or out of your inbox the first time they contact you. Helps make sure that the only emails that hit your receive are from people you know and trust. 

 Not viable for businesses though. 

 They make a lot of money charging $99/month

Its mostly user driven (outside of spam), so you can screen people out who aren't spam.

I missed important emails in the past because of spam/ spam filtering. 
Because the current solutions just sends everything it doesn’t recognize to junk.
