Can you share the note? I'd like to read the original argument.

I think direct funding and subscriptions are the way to make nostr sustainable in the medium to long term, grants are a way to bootstrap a rich app ecosystem in the short term. If you don't agree with grants you can just directly fund projects and devs but is not constructive to attack OpenSats or grants at this stage. My two sats.
My beef is more with Ten31 and Hivemind Venture. Primal… but other things also stink.

I don’t like when things are presented in misleading ways. I have no beef with the idea of grants, but I feel something named OpenSats should be more open about its functioning.

I don’t like seeing people with a successful past in data mining operate on Nostr, especially in a client that engages in npub/email matching.

I like to follow the money, the past and the entourages it gives a clearer picture.

Let me find a few relevant notes I posted recently…
Your concerns are valid, thanks for sharing those notes but I don't see anyone making the argument that grants are the way.

I agree that being more transparent would help clear some FUD about OpenSats. I posted about it not so long ago:

As a nostr committee member I'm okay with all my opinions and votes being public. Grantees shouldn't be doxed but I don't see why the grant proposal and amounts shouldn't be public for transparency. It's not my decision tho, I just help review grant proposals.

People tend to think that the board of OpenSats chooses who gets the money but it's mostly the nostr committee, board members usually chime in if a tiebreaker vote is needed. There are several people with diverse backgrounds and perspectives in the committee and none of them have a vested interest in Primal. I won't directly mention them but they are people that have contributed a lot to nostr and genuinely want the best for the protocol.

Nostr is going to be data mined whether you like it or not, it's all out in the open. Nostr is for the stuff that you are ok sharing with the world. That said I think a KYCd wallet/client is a terrible idea and have voiced my disgust about it in the past.
 Thanks for the thoughtful reply.

I just wish that we find another model of monetisation than data mining or we’re heading towards the same shit we trying to escape. But mostly, I am just shouting into the void to bring some awareness.

I understand how grants are needed. I also know what happens when an industry is left to rely massively on them (European film industry for example)

I don’t want to shoot down, I’m just curious about reactions, they give me “data” to get hopefully a little bit closer to the truth.

I'm 100% with you on this, that's why I pushed zap splits and now I'm trying to contribute to Highlighter. I want an online economy to happen on nostr where value flows to every participant: relays, file hosts, content creators, curators, devs.

I acknowledge that grants make us complacent and remove pressure to build sustainable projects/businesses but I also think they are helpful for the people building the non-customer facing tech and bootstrapping the ecosystem. That's why I haven't reapplied for another grant after the previous one finished and won't be doing it. I want to stay independent and I prefer to let my work speak for itself and get funded by peers/customers.

I have to disagree with my fren @𝕾𝖊𝖗 𝕾𝖑𝖊𝖊𝖕𝖞 here: If direct funding, zap splits and subscriptions aren't sustainable then nostr isn't sustainable and will die. I refuse to believe that and will keep fighting for nostr to succeed.

Thanks for this convo, I learned a lot.
Thank you. It helped me a whole lot as well. It was a discussion, not simply a dismissal. 🫂
🫂 appreciate your patience and honesty. bullish on nostriches like you.
I respect your work and your style. You’re definitely one of the plebs who made me stick around.
idk why he said im tied to a nostr player, im not tied to any clients or projects.

but yeah i didn’t word it right i think its important at the early stage n its more sustainable than the other models at the early stage when nobody is using your product yet or nobody knows about it yet like you said the bootstrapping phase, gek called it the seed phase n agreed on that as well, also looking back sustainable wasn’t the right word n idk why people don’t like to acknowledge that without them most projects wouldn’t have stood a chance and tons are going back for them, doesn’t have to be from opensats, HRF n others give them as well. But yeah if anything the way forward might be a mix of all of these different models and im not looking for anyone to agree with me id much rather someone disagree so i can learn something instead.
Very reasonable take my fren, thanks for clarifying your position. I appreciate you 🫂 you've always been one of my favourite people on nostr.
appreciate you too my fren! & same!! 🫂 thank you for all that you do for the space!

n yea im not gonna die on that hill, i woke up thinking about it n i def didn’t word it correctly, i make mistakes n im willing to own them
I should have added a supposedly or reportedly, my bad, sincerely. I do not know you, did not interact that much with you, I truly do not know. But, the allegations of a link with Ten31 kind of painted your note in a different light, hence my poking you to gauge your reaction.

I don’t have any stake in this other than the hopes of a different world for my son. I had very high hopes for nostr, maybe way too high.
all good honestly n I don’t have a son yet so idk how you feel, also I’m just a shitposter with no ties to anyone or anything, I’m usually on the other side of this thing making fun of both sides.. but yeah something drove me to say what I did cus I also expect more than I prob should from others here
