Oddbean new post about login | logout I think I’ve figured out how I like to use nostr. Follow less people, have a slow feed, post every few days, and focus on interacting with people I like.
Yup. Everything got less annoying when I cut out certain relays and started to mute more.
Yeah, and I don’t like feeling that I have to post every day to stay in touch with people. Doesn’t feel natural, I don’t have that much to say either.

Some days I post a ton, most days I post one or not at all. Depends what I'm doing. I post a lot more vacation for example. There's more note worthy events happening. On another subject "note worthy event" is the perfect description for exactly what you're actually doing on nostr and I just noticed 😂
You've cracked it my friend. I often, more than often, in fact, trawl The Global feed. I do, however, have a small follow count. (I don't have a massive follower count either), but I do like to curate my follow numbers by being discerning and not just following my followers. Fuck me, that sounded a bit garbled. I've had a drink, I know what I mean though😬😂.
Have you found an ideal number of people to follow? For me it’s anywhere between 500-900. I’ve noticed once it’s over 900 my feed starts to get less enjoyable
Trying to get <1K. I found 600+ that were inactive for more than 3 months 🤯
Wow 😮 how often do you clean those out? I try to do it every few months. I deleted like 200 a few weeks ago.
Is there an easy way to do it?
Someone had made a tool that you could use to purge inactive accounts but I never tried it because I remember people saying it messed up their follows. I just do it manually.

I try to do it every few weeks. But I used to do it with tools like nostraidvm but it didn’t find everyone and would spit out a list. I tried with noogle filter this weekend but my follow list got rugged. From my talk with elsat, it seems like it was because of the issue with the big follow lists. So I started doing it manually. It got rugged again (it jumps back from ~1300 to ~1600). But Semisol’s restore saved me this time 😮💨
What’s your criteria for deletion? Inactive for more than 3 months? 2 months?
My general rule is no posts or replies for a month. I figure at that point it’s clear that nostr isn’t really a priority for them. With very few exceptions, I want to follow users who are consistently active. And very large follow lists seem to cause problems with user experience, so me following an inactive npub is essentially like dragging around dead weight from relay to relay. But I also make exceptions to my 1 month rule, such as if I know we never engage with each other, or if they’re a little bitch ass hoe, etc.

Most days I have a limited amount of time to spend on nostr. No time for little bitch ass hoes in my timeline or notifications 😂 To be fair, I chose 1 month somewhat arbitrarily but it’s been my consistent guideline. I figure it’s normal for people to take time to unplug, go on vacation, get busy with projects, etc. A week or two offline, to me that seems normal. But if it starts pushing towards a month or more, then to me it seems like you’ve got better things to do, and that’s perfectly fine and your prerogative, but I don’t want that npub being dead weight, that’s all.

Is there an app to review follow list activity?
I use Nostur and if I tap on a profile pic it gives a little popup that includes “last seen” which essentially calculates the last time you signed an event to a relay i’m connected to. I’m not sure if there’s one that shows it in a more consolidated view for all your follows though. Yeah, I prefer the 400-500 range. Anything more, and it’s difficult to catch up if I’m away for any time longer than 2 days. Also, I end up missing good notes from good people. I think I’m attempting to make itsimilar to how I would interact with people irl.
How I picture you catching up with 500 people irl 🤣 But yea, I like that approach to. I’m on nostr pretty much every day, some days more so than others, but I find that it kind of mimics irl interactions more than other social networks do. I follow 500 people but how many do I talk with on a regular basis? Probably 10-15, wherein we have actual conversations like this 😂
