What exactly is the problem as a woman on Nostr? What is different to other social media platforms? I don’t understand. Please explain
Other platforms allow users to be blocked and reported and potentially banned from using the platform for hate/harassment/etc. This isn’t the case on nostr of course because that completely goes against the whole foundation of nostr. There’s too many issues to list, but you can research it if it’s helpful. To me, it feels like a microcosm of being a woman in the world. For example, I posted a picture of myself but then received hate for it because I’ve brought up mistreatment by other nostr men (aka if I post a picture like that then I deserve mistreatment). We’re held to the same BS societal guidelines here as we are in the real world. And when women bring up the issues here (in a kind way), we’re still unheard, harassed, and not considered. We just want our experiences to be considered, not dismissed. I hope that helps.
Which client are you using? I’m using Damus and Primal. I’m constantly blocking users. I can also report a user. Once you block a person you won’t see the content, comments of this person anymore. So what it comes down too is that you want people to be banned? Is that it? https://m.primal.net/HqSg.jpg
I use primal and mute them. But that doesn’t block them. They can still follow you and interact with your content.
Okay. You mean they could comment and repost, and even if you don’t see them, others could see it. And that is bothering you. Right?
Yes exactly!
Hmmm. Okay. See your point. That’s a trade off of Nostr. Look, I see it this way. If I don’t see it, I don’t give a shit. I can’t control what people say or do, but I can control what I see from them. Stupid people will do stupid things. This is reality. Unfortunately.
It’s definitely a trade off. I think it’s also the fact that I even have to encounter it to begin with. It is reality and the world we live in, but it’s not something I’m subjected to in a personal way like I am here (except when I was in the military). I don’t think it’s for everyone and everyone has to decide how they want to use it. I’m still figuring out if it’s worth it for me. I appreciate your perspective 🤗
Freedom of speech includes stupid things that might insult another person. We can’t have the one without the other. That’s just how it is. Either freedom of speech. Or not. And the decision is up to the individual in case of social media. Thank God we have the choice now.
This is incorrect. Women could control access to their notes with encryption. Someone just has to build it.
I could still mention your name and talk shit about you. Nothing you could do about it.
Yes, but you'd probably get bored eventually, if you couldn't see me. I mute men and they keep following me and talking at me for MONTHS.
Ahhh, okay. Got it. So you want a way to hide from them? Would that be possible? Like hiding your profile?
You could have private notes, like on Twitter, by encrypting accounts or individual notes. Some devs are thinking about this, already. You could post a selfie note that only follows could see, for instance.
This could be useful also for private groups.
How do they talk at you if you muted them? What are the ways to do that? Are there? Or is it just that muting sometimes doesn’t work properly?
They just keep right on DMing and replying and mentioning. They know they'll eventually be seen or they just don't care. Sometimes mutes don't work, sometimes I switched relays and the new one doesn't have the new mute list, different client settings, problems with a new version, slow Internet connection, etc.
I see. There is able works that need to be done. Thanks for explaining it to me. I didn’t think is that big of an issue
Well, sometimes the smallest issues can have the biggest impact! Thanks for being open to learning more about it. Let's tackle those able works together! 💪 #changemakers #perspectiveiskey
Someone shut these chatbots up on Primal, please. nostr:note1fzy97z56uwhgh59pd08f0j590u0ekjtshlxfgy7vcsxud3d6pekqqrrsc5
Annoying af
Definitely more work is needed on client interoperability. I agree that stuff like the mute function is important and should work consistently. I don’t envy nostr devs, stuff like this is 10x harder on decentralized platforms.
Yes, well, they're here because they want to make a name for themselves doing something hard. So, here's some more hard stuff. 😂 Plenty more hard stuff, once they're done with that. I've got a whole list.
@Coracle fixes this.
I just don’t want people accessing me if they’re cruel.
But are they if you don’t even know that they exist? Once muted a person is not there anymore. This is social media, not real life.
You can usually still see them interacting. Hard to forget them, when you see their reactions, zaps, reposts, etc. And they mutes leak, occasionally.
How can I see them interacting? I don’t see anyone that I’ve muted interacting. Please give me an example. That mutes leak occasionally might be true. Haven’t experienced it yet.
That's a downside to posting things to the internet. Even the people you don't want to access it, can.
I like Amethyst for the phone. Block and report well.
Oh and I’ve reported users but I dont know what that does.
Reports get to the relay owners as I understand it. It also displays on some clients. I block freely. I've been harassed by abhorrent dickheads. Most of my kind flowers report the same harassment and block as well. I'm finding my feed to be well curated to my needs and audience this way, but it can get exhausting. I'm me, a strong woman and person and I have learned to wear a little armor in the form of allied like minds. Yep sometimes I crack and feel small but I try to get back up or at least paint about it to vent. Lol 🫂 Hugs, GF! 🤝
Check out the song: Kate Nash - Dickhead I think you may enjoy it.
Reports just write an event to the relays to indicate that a user or note had been reported. It is up to the relays or clients to do something with those reports. I’m not sure if any relays use these reports but I believe some clients (e.g. Amethyst) have options to use them for filtering.
Pretty much nothing, except make you a bigger target for retaliation.
Block lists can be shared and imported, are any of the women of nostr working on a collective "men who harass" blocklist that new women can use to bootstrap cleaning up their feed? Other than that, as a man I just don't see the harrasment since I don't follow the harrassers and they aren't after me. That doesn't mean I want them around or encouraged. Is there some way you can think of that I can help that doesn't violate the core personal freedom tenet of nostr? Let me know and I'll try.
You can mute/block and report on Nostr. It's up for clients to do whatever they want with those reports. For example, on Amethyst, if enough of your follows report someone and block someone, you will automatically block them too. It's part of your Web of Trust. And this is I feel what needs to be explored and expanded upon. A Web of Trust scores and indicators can be very useful and powerful for users to have positive experiences online. It allows us to build our communities and our networks without groups of trust, just like in real life. When it all boils down to it, we're never going to stop people from being assholes. If someone wants to have a corner of Nostr with a few hundred assholes all circle jerking one another, then they can have it. The other 99.99% of the world will be here dominating the space with love and positivity that is fueled by human connections and zaps. Zaps are a key part of this puzzle. We're incentivized to be nice, kind, and positive to get zaps. Sure, assholes can zap one another, but in the end there's more of us than them. We are the signal. They're just noise. And our zaps far out weigh theirs.
So if you don't like a particular man, you want the power to get him banned and silence his freedom of speech? That doesn't seem very nostrish.
