I believe I’ve become unhealthily addicted to #nostr in a similar way I used to be addicted to Twitter.

I mean I manage it ok, I have a timer for my Nostr apps (all social apps, but I don’t spend time on any others), but I hit my limit and “snooze it” for another 15 minutes… maybe I do it twice, basically every day.

But when I have a minute, I go straight to it to check in on my frens and what they are talking about. Why do I keep doin dis?

Maybe it gets snoozed 3 or 4 times… sometimes.
Are you serious that you have a timer?😊
Yes, lol. It would be much worse if I didn’t. I have app usage limits set on mobile.
And if you don't have anything else to do, and your app it's telling you to finish, what are you doing?
Working on stuff. Recording something most of the time, or doing video work. Otherwise I’m hanging with the fam.
 Nice!

I do the same. I have long given up on these timers. They don't work, I just snooze them all the time.

And I don't even have friends here.

Social media is a real problem.
 Damn
And I thought it was the devil’s algos man
 Dopamine Daze
I found only solution is going to a dumb phone for most of the day. Keeping the other phone out of reach. Only access it on desktop. The phone always in arms reach is a problem. These apps are addicting.
i remember when i had a dump phone and envied reading about the release of the first iphone. today i'm asking myself - how can i reorganize my life to "afford" a dump phone again.
I'm usually on Nostr. It's really the only time consuming thing left on my phone, and I have a timer on it too.

But when fiat news spills into my feed, I've been staying off nostr until it dies down.
I actually prefer and enjoy checking out Nostr instead of my other social media. It’s far more interesting and enlightening! 🙌🏻
I was off of Twitter for almost a year when I "relapsed" to nostr. I completely get it.
Apologies if this is a stupid question…are there ‘bots’ on nostr?
If it’s programable, it has bots.
 Ha thanks!
What if its not just the feed algorithm that makes social media addicting? Perhaps it is an inherent property of this technology. We are social creatures afterall. I can doom scroll NOSTR just as hard as classic social media.
Because it is new, different and has tons of potential. Would you know if there is any good AI client already?
Just deleted my comment idk why…unless youre addicted to a particular person (which I can get) I guess maybe you’re just feeling you want more social interaction? I use social media/nostr more on the days I don’t feel like going out or have been too busy etc with work at home. And barely use it when I am busy
But I don’t think it’s too unhealthy in fact the opposite really because it might help people feel less isolated and bored sometimes 😊 but always good to have a balance and if it’s stopping you being productive or you freak it’s an issue, it’s good to be able to recognise that and make the steps to limit social media usage. The nostr meets ups are a good way to do some irl things
*you feel it’s an issue not freak lol soz 🙃
One of the best things I can think of is getting stuck in to a project or hobby (one of mine currently working in music) so you have something more to discuss with people when you come back to a social media platform. Cos it’s more exciting to have something complete instead of half finished to tell people about 👏
Also it’s positive that on a social media protocol, you’re less likely to be a target of toxic data harvesting etc and more likely to be in a naturally cultivated positive environment of your own making. With a variety of forms of communication to stimulate you eg in posts/links/discussions and ability to communicate with people you might not have done before. So not all bad!
maybe what we need is some proof-of-work mechanism - no success in finding a valid hash, no feed for you today! 😁
I reckon its part socializing and part info hunter-gathering
how do you set up the timer?
If on iOS you can set category or individual time limits under “Screen Time” in settings. Really useful and it’ll give you stats for whether you are doing worse or improving.

I’m certain there are options in Android and Graphene or the like, but I’ve not used them because they are secondary devices for me. Maybe @Jeff Swann knows
No idea, if anyone figures out something that works, please share
