Does anyone actually use this protocol? I've never heard it or any of the apps on XMPP.org

 I used it recently when we had the att cell outages.  Using xmpp and only wifi, i could still make calls/texts.   

 Yes. It's been in use for over a decade. I used to use it with Pidgin, back when Instant Messengers were the rage.
