 Then the question is how easily people cam be manipulated when they have transactions without money involved.

 I don't think they can be. Are your chickens chicken? and are my vegetables vegetables?

If I grow vegetables and you raise chickens, if we barter, we both can make chicken noodle soup. 

If I grow vegetables and you raise chickens, and I buy your chicken with money, one of us can make chicken noodle soup.

 But I don't like chicken soup, I am in dire need of a tarte tatin.

 Then us 2 would not barter and you'd refer to your l list of who has or may have what you are looking for.

Why did you travel all this way knowing I didn't have what you wanted?

 One thing to note: it is incredibly unlikely to find persons with fitting needs and circumstances to support your chain of needs. Which increases in length and complexity the greater the distance is that needs to be covered.

 And altough it is not neccessary for some people (which is quite cool) almost everpone else needs it.
