About 85% of nostr's relay network is now offline. We are down to about only 10 relays that are still working well. This number could go either way in the next year, up to 20, or down to 5. There are competing forces of centralization, decenralization and trickle down economics at play. I hope more people run relays and the network gets more support.

I am connected to 20 relays right now, where do you get these numbers? 🐶🐾🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️
I challenge you to remove the biggest 10 and see how you get on.
Oh I know most of them suck, but they are for the niche communities so not a problem 🐶🐾🫡
I think this is really the issue, there are a lot of relays online but usage is concentrated around a few big ones. Most newcomers to Nostr probably just stick with the default relays that their chosen client is set up with and never really consider what relays to use.
And that is fine, there are many clients and more will spawn with time. That’s exactly how Nostr was envisioned, fragmented AF 🐶🐾🫡
It works and we’ve seen big relays go away or get nuked without any major issues but I think it could still make sense to have more quality relays and have notes a bit more distributed across them than we have now.
Is there a public website that gives an overview of all relays (offline and online)?
 @nostr.band maybe ?
 🤷
Its a stats website. Go to website, see if there is relay stats. 🤷
I know this site, but I doubt this is the complete picture....

maybe
I see more than 20 online tbh
You mean 10 biggest? I suppose there are private relays that are active?
still see a lot of relays online on https://nostr.watch
if they die we can always go back to twitterX lol
What do you estimate the monthly cost of running a large relay to be ?
Is that why I'm not getting notifications this morning?

Is it as easy as running a bitcoin node? I would consider.
 easier.
but you need storage and a unlimited bandwidth would also not bad. and sooner or later you have to fight with spam notes. here you can find a lot of relays for your own setup https://github.com/aljazceru/awesome-nostr?tab=readme-ov-file#implementations
I’d love to see the research behind these numbers
oh it's Melvin pulling statistics out of his ass again :o
What are the yearly costs of running a relay?
Not much. Depends how much it's used. Could be as little as $30 in the cloud, or $5 at home. It would go up a bit if it becomes a major relay. Biggest cost by far is developer time.
Did you leave off a couple of zeros? I'm connected to more relays than you seem to think exist.
Is it possible to run a relay on a NAS?
Yes, but you would need to open a port or port forward.
 Thanks! That's good to know
As a data consultant, numbers are as good as the source. With that said, where do we get the right source and fact check it?!
Support paid relays with your sats
Perhaps Nostr clients need to become micro relays.
please put here the links of decentralization nostr's realy
 N
One more question. On NOSTR, are likes public? Can anyone see who liked what?
 Yes
 Thanks!
