Your keys, your notes; only you can post, and only you can read your DMs because they are encrypted. However, whatever you post publicly is public data and is available to everyone, it open protocol. You can download copy of them and broadcast it to some other relay.
yes— understanding “relays” is the true key.
When I joined, I had a lot of misconceptions also. Nostr is mostly about anti-censorship. And even that, it’s not always true. Nostr does not guarantee privacy. Your notes are out in the open, the pictures you upload, etc…if you are not using a VPN, you are giving away your IP address to the relays owners… The relays have policies that are not known. So no one knows what will happen to your data, how long it will be kept, etc…
Oof, doesn’t sound too appealing to me :/
So, basically, the goal is that you should never have to worry about these things. Some developments are happening in the NostrDB (database) space and elsewhere. All these backups will be automated after that. But yeah, it's nice to know what's happening under the hood. 😂
I appreciate all of you. I teach reading but always chat with kids & parents about coding & tech in general. Another reason I joined Nostr is to learn— the protocol is fascinating— even if I’m a fish out of water.
We appreciate having you here too ! 💜🫂 and we are all learning.
thank you!
Well first of all welcome back, we missed you here 🫂💜 That comes with the package of an open access protocol. You should not post anything here that it’s not public literally. Traditional social media is giving your data to one entity. Nostr is giving your data to everyone 😂 I feel like privacy is not compatible with anti-censorship. Example : if I wanted to have control over my data, let’s say that the data is stored only in my relay. If I censor the relay, then I have succeeded in censoring the individual. To prevent that, nostr is broadcasting your notes to several relays. And the consequence, you don’t have any control on how your data is handled.
I value privacy over anti-censorship on a personal level and I think that’s why nostr often doesn’t sit quite right with me (evident in the fact that this is my fourth time here 😅) I’m tempted back because it’s a fun place but I have no doubt I’ll delete my account again, whether tomorrow or two years from now. Not that it makes a difference in privacy as my notes will never be deleted, nor my pictures.
I’m on the same page too, between privacy and anti-censorship. I’ll choose privacy, any day. It’s a fun game for me 😂 to discover your account randomly each time.
Ha! Made me laugh. It’s fun for me as well to come back to something new each time. Then again, I’m not me if I’m not inconsistent, impulsive, and fickle 🥲
"Know thyself." Good reveal. 🙏😁💜🫂😆👍
So you need your own relay?
or make friends with people you trust— who know how to operate one. The more devs who use the protocol a diverse community will grow into all kinds of usages such as ZBD.
Or use a service that handles all the abstractions, so that a non-tech user can run their own relay. (http://relaying.io) I do want the community to be bigger and diversified here that for sure, but through ZBD. ZBD represents all the values that led me to escape traditional social media. 1- You do not have access to your private key, so you are stuck using ZBD, and cannot switch to another client. If ZBD had your private key, meaning it can see your DMs for example, write notes on behalf, etc,..so not your key not your account. 2- ZBD requests location access, does not accept you using VPN to play games, and asks you to activate tracking. So there is data collection mecanisms behind this! And maybe, you data is sold to data brokers (that I’m not sure about, hence the maybe)
I understand your concerns. My hope was a diverse community would emerge sooner than later & I joined for similar reasons— but now all my notes are at the mercy of relays anyway! I’ve seen people create new npubs to check things out in ZBD. I think it’s fun to explore the protocol & maybe devs can make it possible to secure keys in ways that will satisfy the concerns you mentioned— security, choice & the autonomy that is very important to the Bitcoin community.
Only future will tell ! 💜🫂 I feel like we are just talking about the negative here 😂 on a more positive note, the community here is amazing and open to discussion always !
I agree!! Chatting with you felt very positive— expression brings clarity & a breath of fresh air with the right people. Thank you very much! 💜
