Well, position and order matters in language.

As for special characters, I suppose most systems and keyboards have some mechanism for producing the most common ones. But I am kind of sceptical of solving what is actually markup by adding special characters. The ° is a proper character, but subscript and superscript 2 is usually just markup.

everyone reads it as "squared" 
 @8f0fb9a3 the markup actually irritates me because i'm often googling "squared symbol" to copy-paste into somewhere else, and when i try to paste to somewhere that lacks formatting, it just turns into a plain 2, which isn't the desired result. i'd rather have that be a character.
