Oddbean new post about | logout
I was wondering since a while and now even more:

Is there some magic about Pixel phones or Graphene OS that justifies trusting Google all of the sudden ?

Pixel phones allow you to re-lock the bootloader after flashing a new OS.
What exactly does it mean ?
A locked bootloader on a phone makes it more secure by preventing unauthorized software modifications. It also protects your data. If your phone is lost or stolen, a locked bootloader makes it much harder for a thief to access your personal information. I think pixels are unique in their ability to lock using a custom OS.
Nice. But that is assuming that google is not putting in backdoors yes ?
 Yeah pretty much.

Do you also have an idea why did people decide it’s a valid assumption?:D
I can't figure out the "de-Google by using their hardware" logic either. With SOC tech being cheap, it would be trivial for them to still have ways of snooping. Not to mention the financial benefit.
 Because they don't think much.

I have an article about how fucked up phones are these days -

The tools cops use to crack phones don't work on GrapheneOS, that's the main thing I think.

The devs of GrapheneOS have great documentation, a lot of questions could be answered reading that

They have forums too, if you have more questions.

 Asking the right questions 👌🏼
I have had this same question myself. How do we know they're now just gonna leave themselves a little keyhole?
