Electricity transmission infrastructure is ugly to many people, but I generally find it to be uplifting. Maybe it’s because of my original profession.

Electricity is one of the biggest quality of life enhancers for people, and so transmission lines give me a sense of development and progress. Distribution lines are often haphazard looking, but transmission lines generally have a bigger and more organized appearance which kind of appeals to my sense of order.

In forested areas they tend to be more subtle/hidden, but in deserts they’re just kind of out in the open. https://image.nostr.build/c3d86df1d3762fd93357235591690aeb2131d978ac62271233bf188bdc30ad16.jpg
I don't understand why people complaining about it. Just wait till the get what they want, no lights, no hot food, no phone. They will quickly realize.
 Plus those look cool.
Where there is power- there is prosperity!

Progress and development that is buried is preferable.

When we needed to juice the economy in 2020 we should have made improvements like burying the power lines.

I always thought it would make a ton of sense to do major roadwork and infrastructure improvements through the pandemic. People needed work, and roads/trains and such were empty. But of course, seemingly nobody jumped on this opportunity.
So grateful you exist and share yourself and your brilliance. Much love to you and yours.

A 765 kV line can transmit more than 2200 MW of power up to 300 miles. These transmission lines are like the blood circulation system of a region.
I was bemoaneing the aesthetics of powerlines running through my neighborhood to my grandmother a few years back. She countered that she always found them good to see. She lived through the electrification of the rural west and to her they represented a massive reduction in back breaking labor.

now in Kyiv we have two times a day 3-4 hours electricity off. we sort of get use to it but yes, electricity is the biggest quality of life enhancers

if your lost inawoods and find this, it can save your life
 Tru that
Most people would not like to live too close to it however, due to the magnetic fields that surround them.

 Transmission lines look very "purposeful".

I like to get the kids to count the porcelain insulators and try to guess the voltage.

Power infrastructure management is super cool 😎 important work that requires bravery and smarts

Why are they hosing it down
Seasonal winds carries salt in the air which causes corrosion if not washed off over long periods of time.

Maintenance procedure to extend the life of these towers
I've seen this done in real life, south of Portland, Oregon along I5.

I did a tripple-take, not believing my eyes.
Looks like on the Desert Road from Cairo to Alexandria. Thanks again for this insightful report. I enjoy to read your excellent journalistic work!
Some people see this and think it's ugly oh no what have they done to the scenery. I see this and I think "nice, this is the solarpunk future I want to live in, this is fucking gangster, we milk the sun and slow down the winds".

Electricity definitely is one of the biggest quality of life enhancers and possibly also a factor in most modern chronic diseases

I prefer power lines to be buried personally. Like email is preferable to snail mail. Much less failure due to tree branches falling on them or cars crashing into poles. The birds in my neighborhood agree with you however😉

Remember being blown away the first time someone explained that the primary and secondary coils inside a transformer aren't physically connected? How magnets, motion and hundreds of miles of copper wire liberated your grandma from having to use a washboard, tub and buckets of creek water to clean your mom's clothes?

Would be better if the grid ran on higher frequencies.. 50/60 hz not great for life in general
I want to know why too
If regulation wasn't an issue (big ask I know), do you think that there could ever be economically viable small scale electricity production from an efficiency standpoint? Like having a mini reactor in your home or neighborhood. Or will large plants with line transmission always be more viable due to the efficiency gains of scale?
What are your thoughts on Tartaria and aether power transmittted from cathedaral spires? Check that out.
One of my professors told me about an US American student being in Germany for the first time. He thought that German cities were underdeveloped cause he couldn't see any of the electric grid...
For those wondering, it's mostly underground.
I like the distribution part of the electrical grid to be underground. Thats the part of the grid that connects to residential areas.

It is underground for both my US home and my Egyptian home.

Transmission lines are more expensive to put underground, and they go quite long distances. In Egypt’s case, they run between cities across the desert, so above-ground is likely far more economical.
The high voltage/cross country grid is mostly above the ground here as well.
A home in Egypt? I'm jealous!

Btw. just had to buy your book cause it's not included in kindle unlimited. But I want to see what all the fuzz is about.

Stay weird.
however, above ground is far more susceptible to sabotage and solar flare damage

and i should point out that smaller, more distributed generation locations is more resilient
i grew up without in kiambu county #Kenya and still there are regular #blackouts
the artist R. Crumb famously drew clusters of power and phone lines because he felt like they were hard for artists to imitate.

it’s just pure function, not much thought out into form. https://image.nostr.build/a2088958bdf3077d512bffc490528b66f2d9d67b3afc3c22abd9016cafe937b7.jpg https://image.nostr.build/6655d08cb42377a36377233591113fa5a94de48f60fad516c01d2d0a87ec2d09.jpg
You can tell a lot about the region you're in by the differences in pylon design ranging from local wildlife to geology of the area.
 What was your original profession?
Wind turbines are beautiful. I grew up in a town with a bunch of them out in the hills.
