"Tried it, but I don't get it and it feels weird" is the number one comment I receive on X when I talk about Mastodon. And it kinda irritates me sometimes while I understand the different domains can be confusing and the whole "learning new" thing is scary in this life.

I'd make the case that it's important to the development of the internet, that it's like going from AOL keywords to using a browser. difficult but worthwhile to prevent the domination of a whole new part of our shared reality by one corporation. but many don't remember those days.
@c6d0060b The only thing that separates Mastodon usability from X is that it's more open and user oriented. You have to select a server, sure, but that's it. After that I haven't seen anything that would make it feel "weird".

And the people are nicer for sure.
@c6d0060b Mastodon needs to improve the onboarding process and make a less clunky web client.

The technology shouldn’t be the selling point, it should be the user experience, that’s when the masses will come.
@c6d0060b On Mastodon I'm not getting ads and promoted posts shoved in my face, like I do pretty much the rest of the internet. Maybe that lack of noise takes getting used to for some people.
@c6d0060b it is harder, especially getting started here because there’s not really a suggestion based algorithm. It is better (or can be) once you get it set up. But it is very DIY. People just aren’t ready for that having been spoon fed by the commercial advertising based apps.
