Oddbean new post about | logout
 Fuck Reddit.

Now they are locking my account on a weekly basis and forcing a password reset. The only reason I can come up with to explain this is they're discriminating against me for using VPNs.

 stacker.news is the new reddit
 It would seem so

Ignore this. I mistook the link for making a different point.
They’re trying to make it unusable
The real question is why do you still use Reddit? Up to 50% of the comments are bots
I can't even access the Reddit site because of my VPN
Never had an account but sometimes I'll search something that leads me to a subreddit and the last few days I've been blocked from accessing public pages. I also figured it is because I am using a VPN.
 Same here.
gotta clean up the riff-raff before the IPO
This happened to me 3 times on IG. All I could think of was my VPN. Really frustrating.
 NOSTR all the way baby!
Or these guys looking out for ya

Yup. Happened to me too. Got a "ban evasion" permaban. Never evaded a ban, so must have been my VPN's IP matched another redditor. 14yo account RIP.
Got recently banned and also the subreddit of the website too. I just deleted everything.
Quite likely. Theyre public now, its investor pleasing time... x.x
I knew they had removed VPN access for annon browsing. They where/are letting signed-in people use them?

I don't get their game plan. They're just making the site irrelevant.
anything centralised is bad... no exceptions
 They're "protecting" you. 🥴
They block mullvad ip completely and I didn't care enough to try changing location.
Same for Tor, you get shadowbanned instantly these days.

Fuck reddit, hello lemmy!
The so called free X has his Tor site broken since Elon took over. If we don't build and use free social media, there won't be.
All I get from them lately is...https://m.primal.net/HfqN.jpg
I'm always surprised when they rarely let me pass with a VPN.
So strange, my main account has only ever been used behind a VPN and I’ve never had issues.

Wonder what the trigger is for yours?
you're able to use Reddit behind a VPN? I always get blocked
 Yup, never had any issues.

Mostly IVPN.
have not tried that -- good looking out. I've been on Mullvad
I'll be damned, IVPN works. thanks for the tip 🙏
 same, I use Mullvad.
fwiw I just tried IVPN and it works with reddit
Reddit never locks me out because of my VPN. I used to have that issue with my bank though & it was infuriating. I called them & was told to change my username & see if that worked. Wtf? I'd been with the bank for years before thevproblem started but I changed my username & problem solved. Weird 🤷‍♂️
lets build a reddit on nostr.
PLEASE BUILD A FORUM ON NOSTR
Stacker News is the closest with nostr integration.
Already exists, people just need to post more https://satellite.earth/
Google intergrated Reddit API in Gemini so yeah, reddit will boot vpn bc money

Using a FireFox based privacy browser, with aggressive settings extension etc, plus a VPN: anything behind Cloudflare is purely inaccessible to me. I could probably list the number of sites I can access on one hand. Most of the web requires fingerprinting and Chromium based browser with all of the extra tracking features Mozilla staff refuse to implement. I lost access to more than a dozen accounts over the weekend due to 10-minute-mail email addresses as usernames. I refuse to give you access to send junk to my inbox.

What bothers me even more (and they have legitimate reasons), is Brave came out with a statement a week or so ago that said were dropping support for extreme privacy settings in Brave because the large majority of the internet is just plain borked and it "singles you out".

Us engineers are not free of blame from this incentive nightmare. It's time to end this! Stop building software that allows spying on your friends and family.
use old.reddit.com, it works same as always - until they decide to shut it down
 Whoa WHAT?!
Same for all company run services. Nostr ftw
I haven't used Reddit for I dunno, 8 years? Never missed it. I disliked it almost as much as Steemit at its worst.

Remember Steemit? LOL
Lemmy with Sync or Voyager is the best alternative available to Reddit. After IPO Reddit will be much worse.
Ya they block alot of vpns. So my ability to access reddit questions and answers has been handicapped for past year
 Free advert for Nostr.
Yup. I was going off of reddit since they brought in all the restrictive changes, but im just not turning off my vpn to browse their site.

This has helped considerably with my phone addiction 😅
