Okay, I finally sorted out how I want to deal with this whole ditto community thing. nostr:nevent1qqsqywyt97ww73anq64p2pmmw5z64luj04dk8vecffyura7gg625m2cpypmhxue69uhk7un9vahkucnfw33k76twv4e8xtnrdakj7un9d3shjq3q5p949ncwdpzqcvfkmv05gnd0fk39lnueyf5j2g2f54n5xh3x5lksxpqqqqqqzatxwdf
So you figured out how to have users read and write to one relay and not have notes broadcast to other relays?
I mean, not that I really figured it out. That's just kind of how Ditto works out of the box. Ditto comes with yourdoimain.com/relay is your instances relay. If you don't add any other Relays to your instance of Ditto, it only reads and writes from itself. For some reason I felt the need to add other relays to the instance of Ditto when I first set it up and that it ingested a whole bunch of random crap into the global timeline. Not really ideal for a themed relay.
and don't even think about connecting a nostr client to the ditto relay, no notes will be broadcasted outside of your instance
For a themed relay where I want really only Oregon-specific users to participate, that's fine.
Just make it clear to the users that their posts are stuck on there only
Yep, trying to make that as clear as possible.
It just ruins the Nostr experience...... Decentralized, freedom..
I haven't looked into ditto yet. When you say don't connect nostr clients to ditto, what is the client to use?
DItto is a nice nostr relay that can filter out Spam plus the Soapbox Web UI. Soapbox was ported over from the Fediverse. It was used by Gab, Spinster.xyz, and TruthSocial.
So use soapbox web ui connected to ditto relay?
Yes, Ditto will serve the Soapbox Web UI for you.
Do nostr clients like Amethyst not work with ditto?
They work fine. All you have to do is add the relay to your relay lists and you start showing up on at least the global feeds of, whatever ditto relays you add.
In a sense, I definitely agree with you, but I'm definitely trying to keep this to a region-specific relay. More of an experiment than anything else. Someone who's comfortable with nostr and selecting their own relays can just add the relay to their normal list if they want to participate and post there and show up in global. If they really feel like it, they can get the Nip-05 and show up in the feed. Also the idea behind this was kind of to set it up for Meetups in my area, so maybe somebody in Oregon could discover meetups in their area, that they didn't know about if they're already on nostr. It definitely silos somebody to that relay only if they sign up through Ditto, but nothing is stopping them from taking their keys and importing it into another client.
Good luck, You will be competing with MeetMe, Neighbors, Facebook and more =)
True facts, but hopefully the folks who are already going to Bitcoin meetups will take an interest in this. I had a couple people from surrounding areas come to one of our meetups and say they would be interested in using something like this, so I spun it up for people to fuck with.
This is more how I was first excited about nostr
Yeah, when I first started using nostr, I thought it would turn into relays that were more like BBS topic boards where you subscribe to a relay where you talk about cars or baseball or fishing.
