I waited tables while taking classes.  Every restaurant paid servers $2.13 per hour. If you don't get the best shifts and best tables, it sucked.  I switched over to line cook and started at $9, then $13, and now its $15-18 at most restaurants; outside of being a professional sous chef or head chef at a boutique ristorante or banquet setup.
