 Wow cool! What is the theoretical max distance for those things? I guess it depends on the antenna?

 Antenna and elevation. 
Higher powers require HAM licensure, but LoRa really means long range... Record distance is 832 km apparently but expected is 10 miles for line of sight or 3 miles in urban settings.
