Why Nostr? It enables free, decentralized communication, beyond the reach of centralized control. Why is it important? It protects privacy and freedom of speech in an increasingly monitored world. Why should people care? Your data is your property. Nostr gives you control over your identity and protects your freedom.

1. Because it's all we have left. We have an open protocol that is getting better by the day, we have hope. 2. We need the ability to openly communicate in a permissionless way. We cannot rely on centralized trash and people like elon. Telegram's founder gave in to the government in less than 2 weeks. 3. See 1 and 2.

Freedom of speech is an unalienable right. Unalienable rightrs are not granted by governments and they cannot be taken away by any government or person. Freedom of speech is not granted by the 1st Amendment. The 1st Amendment explicitly tells the goernemtn that it shall not infringe on the freedom of speech or on the freedom of religion.

No ads, sponsored content, verification. It's important because verification is the start of too much control and social credit scores scare me. Many people don't care about control anymore (I think it's sad) but for those who care about their freedom and independence from control Nostr offers a better alternative to what currently exists - with so much additional potential beyond what we have seen in traditional social and communication platforms 💯🙌

I'm new here, but I understood this can be an uncensored version of x, instagram, tiktok and youtube all in one place! If this is correct, that's simply mind-blowing and I'll never go back! Honest question: will these relays be able to cope with storing all the data if everyone moves to nostr?

The primary features that make Nostr important are decentralisation, personal control of keys, and of course censorship resistance. All other features, whilst maybe cool, are just stocking fillers in comparison.

I’ll answer according to my understanding (pleb though I may be): Broken money leads to centralized control of the flow of information. This happens because privately held social media companies effectively hold a monopoly (and so does Google) on this market. The network effect has made it difficult for regular folks to forego making use of them, because it’s the average persons primary means of keeping in touch with each other. They can amass a large troughs of information that they can sell to advertisers. They can make special interest groups to lobby the government. So they help the rich to get richer and strangle the users into “safe” spaces using algorithms. “Unsafe” content often connotes sex traffickers and terrorists (which, obviously nobody likes), and conspiracy theorists; but over the last few years we have seen anything less than politically expedient to be wantonly censored. In this manner, social media and bit tech feed into consolidation of political interests, and the furtherance of fiat crimes. Nostr leverages hard money and circumvents all of these atrocities. It gives users access to content without the interference of the algorithm. It protects the potential for users to earn hard money for their contribution of value. Nostr is the first social media protocol since Usenet that is global and borderless. No corporate borders, no national borders. Not even email is as free ranging because SMTP servers have been coopted by government fiat. Anyone is able to choose their relays, and post messages. If a relay goes down, 2 other will rise in their place. And it's all based in text.

If those Australian censorship laws are passed then all Aussie citizens will need Nostr to speak freely. They have given Ausies one week to put in submissions during first week of school holidays and football grand final this weekend, as well as public holiday short work week.
