I told my mother about bitcoin for years and she was like “yeah, cool, nah.” She’s in her 70s.
And then I was like “The HRF eg @gladstein is doing cool shit for human rights with bitcoin.”
And once I showed her some examples, she was like “holy shit” and joined their newsletter and is like 110% onboard with their mission. She reads their newsletters more than me now, and asks me questions about them, so I have to catch up on them to answer her stuff.
She still doesn’t own Bitcoin but is like, reading every HRF email and asking me about them and totally onboard.
@gladstein seems like the tag didn’t stick in my OP
Bitcoin is open source. Open Source is our global proof of free speech and conduction of private commerce.
Prime example of finding inroads into the minds of family and friends to get them to at least start comprehending BTC. Every different person have their own interests, biases and incentives. Even moms😂
Well done
You can be asking her now instead 😂
I managed to convince my mum to buy some BTC in 2020.
She simply trusted me with this.
She doesn't understand it, and doesn't study it, but that's ok.
I started giving friends and family opendimes with sats to get them started. It works!! They want to know more. In the process I let them scan the QR-code with Blue Wallet so they can watch the progress and receive sats. I totally send them some on their birthdays.
Everyone’s got their own angle.
We just need to figure out what it is instead of force orange pulling them.
Maybe set up a hot wallet with some Sats and tell her she can donate to HRF. Then she will be on a mission with motivation.
For years occasionally I've been talking with a friend of mine about Bitcoin and never seemed to be interested. Five years ago I gave him €30 in bitcoin by sending it to a wallet on his phone and explained how to keep it safe.
Five years later and multiple new phones, he found his backup words, installed a wallet and did a restore. He was very surprised to see that its value had gone up 7x to €210. He's now interested to buy and wants to know more about Bitcoin :-)
They always want to buy when it tops...
where does the HRF money come from?
Seems like Bitcoin is the wrong thing to be using for human rights work. Well, I guess it depends on what type. Monero would be the better option though.
Why we bitcoin is much more impactful then how we bitcoin 🔥
This is how we feel about TLN and any future forking (don't @ me; I know! I read the whitepaper a decade ago)
My parents listen and get it to a degree, but also admit they don’t get it. I think as tech native generations get older, adoption will increase
I have a few very close family and friends that work in the charity sector
Weirdly I find it very hard to get them interested in Bitcoin
They prefer to get hand outs from Governments and trust institutions like the UN, before questioning the money, and considering Bitcoin
One day there will be a avalanche of mission-driven talent adopting Bitcoin to help the causes they've worked on for so long
Nice reading what you are sharing about your own mum.
How important it is to contextualize Btc's world in order to cover all the possible fields in which it works and moreover, it helps to improve life quality.
I, myself am searching how to reach different audiences in order to "convince" them not to be afraid of entering the Rabbit Hole.
A pleasure reading you, and honoured for it.
Thanks a lot
