This morning listening to the news I heard Governor Gavin Newsom appoint Laphonza Butler to replace Diane Feinstein for the rest of her term. It said she currently lives in Maryland and hasn't lived in California for 2 years.

My question is, was there no one else in all of California qualified to step in that he had to go outside of the state to find someone?

@a2f3726b well, yes, but qualified is such a low bar. She lives in MD because she’s running a national PAC and you mostly do that in DC. She spent 20 years in CA politics so knows the state. That she wasn’t already running for the office is clearly more justification than reason but I might even kinda like it: this is a person who knows state politics and national policy but hasn’t been running for office her whole life.

She sounds like a good choice, precisely because she’s not one of the three people vying for the spot.

@a2f3726b He's trying to fulfill two promises. One that he would replace Feinstein with an African/American woman, and also because he said that he wouldn't choose amongst the three front runners for the permanent 2024 election. Other then that, I've got no clue.
