I am just catching up on how Australia wants to ban social media for under 16 year olds. Will they try to ID all internet users? How will they define social media? Are they truly going to punish a 15 year old for connecting with their family on Facebook? Where are my #austrich at. What is this nonsense?
I’m finding it hard to believe https://m.primal.net/LvZi.jpg
Thin end of the wedge. At first they came for the children...
Looks like #Nostr will get a lot of new users 😅
From a purely pragmatic POV. Any 15 year old can publish to any relay without permission. Can run their own relay. Can run their own client. Can do so anonymously. Hell they can already do it with Minecraft, let alone Nostr. How will this even work?
In thoery, yes. In practice, no. A relay is a web server, which offers specialized services. It's harder to run a relay than it is to run a web server. It's harder to maintain too. Some will do it, but most will not. Indieweb had a dream of everyone running their own web server. I support it in principle, and I do so myself, but it just didnt take off, because people are lazy. After decades, a handful do it, but it's never going to become significant. Even the nostr relay network is heavily dependent on damus, which I think is a company. So while they might not get everyone, that is never the goal. The goal is to get the vast majority. They will deal with the exceptions if they become a squeaky wheel.
Not a lot of support for it here. What absurdity nostr:nevent1qqsgsfx0y57uzcpm5gwz2jrp9mqhgacvu8m3qd05dqzzy6qw75uh7fspypmhxue69uhhyetvv9ujuun0v33xjumgdaczumn69ac8y6tkv96x2q3qr0d8u8mnj6769500nypnm28a9hpk9qg8jr0ehe30tygr3wuhcnvsxpqqqqqqzwvgmlx
They'll never be able to do this, but they can go fuck themselves for trying.
Do you believe they will try to administer this at the ISP level? It sounds like they are going to ask social media companies to KYC every user?
I think that's the direction they want to head in.
What do we know about how that might work?
Start out with fines for the big players, then whack-a-mole on the long-tail, or anything that becomes big. At some point they'll try and automate it all with AI, but that will probs be a few years away. https://www.npr.org/2024/11/07/nx-s1-5182775/australia-social-media-ban-children
Here's a great way to keep kids safe: Force them to use the dark web. Oh, wait
Strange language isnt it? The web that spies on you is NOT called the "dark" web. The regular unspied upon web is called "dark". I recommend listening to Snowden's talks. He argues convincingly that they will remove privacy from the biggest parts of the web, or add KYC. And everything else will just be marked as suspicious. They'll come after that whether you've done something wrong or not.
There is no clear indication of it being administered at the ISP level from my knowledge...yet. Apparently it is designed to be 'voluntary'...that is just what they say for now isn't it. Re KYC - well yes I guess so. How else would they do it. Can you phone SIM card also become your digital ID...🤯
