yeah. while i’m in the gigi camp on this completely, and think paywalling is suboptimal; i also concede that most people want to be able to monetize their efforts in this way - and that is not going to go away.

so we either make it possible, with all the shortcomings that includes, or they go elsewhere.

If we’re user-centric, lets be user-centric.
 Multi-billion industry around content locking.
True … need to sleep on this side first

hahahaha yeah. Ironic. But humans are control freaks
Free content has never and will never earn anyone a living. Maybe with some rare exceptions.
Without going to ad model that is. Choose your poison. ☠️
it would seem likely many will continue to do this if the capital directs them to do so
The ad model has the correct incentives, value for value doesn’t. As much as I would like for this to not be true …
If we could stream sats to consume content, that might unlock some new and interesting possibilities. But everyone would need to do it or we’d seek out free alternatives
I agree on the surface the ad model incentives seem to make sense in the short term, but not sure about the longer arc of time. Ask @jack ?

So maybe time preference is a factor here. But also agree at scale most are clearly opting for this now.

Lets see how a reversal away from easy money changes this..
Harder money will only make it less likely that creators will earn enough to sustain themselves unless they specifically name a price and ask people to pay it. You’d be less likely to part with your sats.
maybe. Im less certain - about almost anything. I think there are way to many moving parts to be to sure as to how it changes the market and the market dynamics.

Whatever we know is a fraction of what we need to know.
Im open to that possibility tho, sure.
yeah, not sure whether or not that statement is really true or not. But i take your point.

I guess the way im thinking about it, is you can sell it, like a hardcover book, and if people want to buy it from you then thats great. but people can also download the pdf for nothing.

I dont think it has to be exclusively one or the other
I’m definitely generalizing but my point is that charging a price of your choosing is essential to making any serious money and paying for your talents (for regular folks, not some outliers).

This is inherently rooted in psychology - free is not valuable. But put a price on it and all of a sudden it’s worth a look.
Agreed on the setting of a price ✅
Disagree on the things you set a price to.
True. That's why it's silly to focus on the uncontrollable (i.e. not scarce) things.

Relay Communities as Interoperable publication houses ftw 😉
The best part about any DRM is bypassing it.
