 What's the story here? I wasn't here early enough to have watched it happen. Is bitfinex a foreign company? How did they justify stealing the btc?

 The US Feds eventually found the two Bitfinex hackers. They stored the private keys in the cloud. The Feds took the coins. And apparently only ~120k coins stolen. 94k recovered. https://time.com/6146749/cryptocurrency-laundering-bitfinex-hack/
